      <title>History of Halloween</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/history-of-halloween</link>
<description>There is no holiday more strongly associated with horror, with all things creepy, frightening, and supernatural, than Halloween. It's the time of year when creatures of legend come alive, on tv and movie screens, in kitschy decorations, as suffocating rubber masks in costume shops. Witches and werewolves, zombies and vampires and ghosts all pour out into the streets, heading from door to door to ask for candy and play a few Halloween tricks. But the holiday goes beyond family friendly entertainment like pumpkin carving, haunted hayrides, and trick or treating. It represents a time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, when dark and mysterious forces can reach across the great divide and take hold.

      <title>Veronica</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/veronica</link>
<description>In the Summer of 2017, Netflix released a film called, “Veronica.” This foreign film quickly became a sensation across the streaming platform as a scary film that people would dare their friends to watch. It evoked memories of “The Exorcist,” a film that felt so real it would unnerve the viewers to the point that they felt compelled to shut it off. Why did it feel so real? Because the film was based on the real story of a woman named, Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro.

      <title>Urban Legends</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/urban-legends</link>
<description>In 1998, Jamie Blanks and Silvio Horta released "Urban Legend," a slasher film determined to explore the urban legend in all of its creepy glory. The film features a college campus terrorized by a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by classic urban legends, bringing them to life and turning the legend into a reality. The film was met with mixed reviews, but became enough of a success among its found audience to spawn two sequels: Urban Legends Final Cut and Urban Legends Bloody Mary. But where did the legends come from? Was there ever any truth behind them?

      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/zodiac</link>
<description>David Fincher's 2007 film, Zodiac, focused on a killer whose identity was shrouded in mystery, who averted capture during the entirety of his reign of terror. He left breadcrumbs for the authorities, taunting them with clues and coded hints, but his crimes are considered some of the most famous unsolved murders in U.S. history. The true horror at the heart of "Zodiac" began with a murder on lovers' lane in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969.

<itunes:summary>David Fincher's 2007 film, Zodiac, focused on a killer whose identity was shrouded in mystery, who averted capture during the entirety of his reign of terror.

      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/changelings</link>
<description>Irish folktales tell of stolen children, whisked away in the dead of night by the fairies. These children were taken to act as servants, to sate the curiosity of fairies curious about human children, or as an act of revenge. In the stolen child's place, they would leave a fairy child that the parents would raise, with no idea that the little one they conceived and gave birth to was long gone...

      <title>Jaws</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/jaws</link>
<description>Jaws is a movie that, perhaps, needs no introduction. Released in 1975, it was the movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, codified the practice of studios releasing big summer movies, and made generations of people afraid to go in the ocean. The movie was a huge box-office success, but that success has come at a cost...

      <title>Polybius - Death by Video Games</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/polybius-death-by-video-games</link>
<description>The earliest known reference to Polybius comes from coinop.org, a forum for arcade cabinet collectors that was active in the early 2000's. There are anecdotal accounts of the game being discussed on usenet forums in 1994, but those have not been confirmed. All we know is, there are no records of the game existing prior to the year 2000. Although it's possible that this is a sign of a complex government cover-up, most folklorists and game historians take it to mean that the game never existed in the first place. But that just begs the question- where did the story come from?

      <title>The Town That Dreaded Sundown</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/the-town-that-dreaded-sundown</link>
<description>Texarkana is a border town, straddling the line between Texas and Arkansas. Technically, it is made up of two cities that share a name: one in Texas, and one across the border in Arkansas. But when horror came to town on one side of the border, both cities were brought together by a collective held breath, the fear of what would come next. The nightmare began on February 22, 1946...

      <title>Black Water - Australia Crocodile Attack</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/black-water-australia-crocodile-attack</link>
<description>Australia has garnered a reputation over the years as home to some of the deadliest animals in the world. If you swim in the ocean you might encounter a golf-ball sized blue ring octopus with a venomous bite, or the severe sting of the box jellyfish, whose tentacles can stretch to over three painful meters. On the shore, picking up the wrong beautiful shell might result in a prick from the harpoon-like tooth of the cone snail. Further inland, stay out of the way of the cassowary, a massive, incredibly territorial bird with a dagger-like claw made for slicing. There are snakes and spiders ready to skitter and slither underfoot, with varying levels of danger in their bites. But none of these creatures are as infamous as the largest reptile in the world by mass, the toothy, leathery, highly aggressive Saltwater Crocodile.

      <title>Martin - The Vampire of Sacramento</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/martin-the-vampire-of-sacramento</link>
<description>George A. Romero has become synonymous with Zombies, and Night of the Living Dead. Less known, is Romero's vampire film! After becoming a huge commercial and critical success, Romero released a strange, disturbing, and oddly artistic movie called Martin. In one of life’s most disturbing coincidences, when the movie came out, someone much like Martin was getting ready to do something horrific. Seven months after Martin was released, a young and very unwell man named Richard Trenton Chase was about to let his lifelong bloodlust take control. This is the true story of The Vampire of Sacramento.

      <title>Fire in the Sky</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/fire-in-the-sky</link>
<description>Robert Lieberman 1993 film "Fire in the Sky," was based on a book called "The Walton Experience," a first-hand account of alien abduction written by Travis Walton. His ordeal began in 1975, when Walton was working as a logger in Arizona. While out on the job one night, he spied some unusual lights in the sky. His curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to investigate. What followed was an out-of-this-world nightmare of cosmic proportions that became one of the most highly publicized abductions in American history. This is the story of one man's brush with something truly alien, and what can happen when you reach out to touch the Fire in the Sky.

      <title>The Mothman Prophecies</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/the-mothman-prophecies</link>
<description>The series of supernatural events that occurred in Point Pleasant was anything but straightforward. The story involved UFOs, missing and mutilated pets, inexplicable illnesses, frightening phone calls, ultra-terrestrials, the Men In Black, and of course, the iconic flying apparition known as Mothman. All of this leading up to one horrible incident that would claim 46 innocent lives.
But people die in terrible accidents every day, so why all the paranormal fanfare in the Ohio Valley? What attracted the attention of all these strange and mysterious beings to this quaint little town?

      <title>The Bell Witch</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/the-bell-witch-an-american-haunting</link>
<description>In 1804, a man named John Bell moved his wife Lucy and their children to a stately farmhouse in Tennessee, about 50 miles north of Nashville. It was a gorgeous property, surrounded by 100 acres of fertile land, and the crown jewel of the estate was the house. It was a sturdy log house, standing at one and a half stories high with six rooms and a large front porch where John, Lucy, and their little ones could sit and take in the fresh country air. Lucy and John filled the house with nine children, and a great deal of love and care. The Bell family quickly became a respected fixture in the community, garnering a reputation for being good, decent people. Things were pleasant, if uneventful, for over a decade as the Bell family built a proper life in that house. But in 1817, something changed. The placid life of the Bell family began to splinter and crack, until one day their peace broke apart completely, leaving only jagged edges and fearful whispers behind.

      <title>The Hills Have Eyes - Sawney Beane</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/the-hills-have-eyes-sawney-bean</link>
<description>True Crime has always been popular. Even back in the 1800s, the citizens of foggy old London looked forward to the latest issue of The Newgate Calendar, a publication printed by the local Newgate Prison. The Calendar detailed the crimes and executions of notorious criminals, sparing none of the grisly details in the process. Fans of the Newgate Calendar were no strangers to murder, torture, beheadings, and slaughters, but one day, a story that hit the Calendar’s pages rocked the readers to their core: The Tale of the Sawney Bean Clan.

      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/dylatov-pass</link>
<description>On January 23, 1959, a group of students from the Urals Polytechnic Institute in Yekaterinburg hopped on board a late-night train, en route to the Ural Mountains. They were headed off on a cross-country skiing trip, taking a break from their studies for a bit of adventure and excitement, the adrenaline of sport mixed with the rush of the cold air. The group of eight men and two women was led by Igor Dyatlov, a fifth-year radio engineering student and experienced skier. With such a cohesive team, it's a surprise that none of these hikers would make it back...

      <title>Annabelle - Raggedy Anne</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/annabelle-raggedy-anne</link>
<description>In 1970, a woman was shopping in a quaint local hobby shop, when she spotted a gently used Raggedy Ann doll. The doll was charming, clad in a dress patterned with blue flowers, and a crisp white apron, red and white striped socks, and little black shoes. Something about the doll called out to her, and she purchased it as a gift for her daughter’s birthday. What started as a thoughtful gift quickly turned into an ongoing nightmare...

      <title>Winchester - Mystery House</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/winchester-mystery-house</link>
<description>When Sarah began the process of construction on her new home, it had only eight simple, unfurnished rooms. But she quickly set to work on changing that, using her ample funds to hire dozens of carpenters to work on the house at once. By the time the century turned and the 1900s began, the Winchester House had grown to a stately, haunted funhouse of seven stories, 161 rooms, 47 fireplaces, 10,000 panes of glass, two basements, and three elevators. There were gold and silver chandeliers dripping from the ceilings, and custom commissioned stained-glass windows casting colorful shadows on the hand-inlaid floors. The décor was beautiful, but very few people were ever let inside the house itself.

      <title>Amityville - Horror House</title>
      <link>https://shows.acast.com/insidious-inspirations/episodes/amityville-horror-house</link>
<description>This week, we investigate one of the most notorious hauntings in America: 112 Ocean Ave. It was November 13, 1974, the patrons of a local Amityville bar were going about their business as usual: drinking beers, chatting about football, local gossip, and unwinding after a hard day of work. Suddenly, this peace was shattered when a young man burst in, shaking and pale, face slick with sweat. He cried out that his entire family had been shot, and he needed help...
