Many communities create a dualistic environment where one is focused on either action or belief. Put another way: Some folks get overly focused on right belief (orthodoxy) and other folks get overly focused on right action (orthopraxis). This week’s Space Makers, Dr. Robyn Henderson-Espinoza and Rev. Anna Golladay, are the hosts of the Activist Theology Podcast, a podcast born out of the Activist Theology Project. Both the podcast and the project are creating a movement focused on reclaiming the practice of integrating theory and practice. This conversation is both challenging and filled with hope. We talk about why getting really local with our activism can be the best way to live out our own beliefs and why exhaustion is different for those who live in marginalized bodies.

Making spaces, like a flower garden, that serve no “purpose” other than beauty teaches us that worth is not predicated by “usefulness.” This week’s Space Maker, Stephanie Tait, joined us for a conversation from her garden to discuss the lessons of resistance she has learned over the last year tending her garden. Stephanie is an author, speaker, disability advocate, and trauma survivor. Her work aims to create space for the reality of suffering and help provide practical tools for its management and acknowledgement of that suffering in communities of faith and beyond. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that we cannot bypass our suffering to arrive quickly at purpose. Every season is needed and of value, even if it appears barren and unproductive. Space making, like gardening, isn’t always about what is happening above ground, but some of the biggest changes have to happen below the soil. As you may remember from Episode 31, Chris is a mindset and movement coach who helps people connect their work, their souls, and their bodies. Chris returns to the show to discuss the need for making physical space and time to do our own internal work so you can be present for others. Chris challenged us to step away from our cell phones and to make sure we have boundaries, not just for ourselves, but for others as well. Chris reminds us that our base is belonging and that we have to set up practices to remind us of that base identity. This week’s Space Maker is Blake Chastain, someone who has spent the last five years connecting people who have the shared story of experiencing a faith shift. Blake is the host of the Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities podcasts and is the writer of The Post-Evangelical Post newsletter. Blake coined the #exvangelical hashtag, alongside the launch of the Exvangelical podcast, in July 2016 and since then, the podcast has been downloaded over 500,000 times. Thanks to Blake, exvangelical conversations and communities have proliferated online. One of the unique features of the human species is the desire to live a ”meaningful, purpose driven life.” From master classes to bumper stickers, everyone seems to have a suggestion on how we can find our unique purpose in the world. It takes boldness and fearlessness to actually make the space in our lives to evaluate if we are indeed happy with the direction of our lives and vocation. On this episode, we talk to Space Makers Crystal Steckel and John Keeling. Both of these bold humans asked the question, “Is my job my true vocation?” When the answer was no, they made the brave choice to change directions. This change of vocation led to Crystal becoming an RN, and John a CNA as he works towards also becoming an RN. Both of them have served in the medical field during the difficult time of COVID and both would say that. although the work has been hard, it is truly what they are meant to be doing. This episode, we dive into what keeps us grounded during change, and when you know it's time to make a change.

This week’s space maker is Halleemah Nash. Halleemah is a proud product of Compton, California – a city that has greatly shaped her ambition, values, and interest in reaching back as she climbs. She is a first-generation college graduate who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Howard University, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University and Certificate in Nonprofit Management from North Carolina Central University. Her resume is impressive working with everyone from the United Nations to the celebrity brand of Kobe Bryant- but her heart has always been in creating spaces for other people to have a chance to be mentored and creating ecosystems that nurture and cultivate diverse talent . All the work she does is as she says “in service to the younger me” being the person she needed as she was growing up. The conversation talks about the importance of representation, the reason why rest is nothing less than Holy, and why sometimes we have to create the thing we most needed.

This week’s space maker, Peter Lublink, is the executive director of the non profit organization, BethanyKids. The organization helps train surgeons, and makes it fiscally possible for them to serve their own communities in 7 different African countries. The program also helps fund pediatric care for children in those areas. This conversation went everywhere from the need for us to acknowledge systemic racism to the power of movies like Black Panther and the need to not be paralyzed into inaction.

Often Making Space requires us to step out of the communities and the mindsets we previously held closely. After taking that step out it can be surprising when we discover that wholeness and integration require us to make peace with the places we once had to reject and to share new perspectives and experiences with both our old and new communities. This week’s Space Maker Brenda Davies never set out to become an expert in Christian sexual ethics/ theology, nor when she packed her bags for Hollywood did she see herself becoming a YouTube star, but once she experienced an awakening she ended up becoming both and making space not just for herself but for thousands of other people who weren’t able to find spaces online. She now invites other people to become inquisitive, fearless, sex-positive, free-thinking Christians in the modern world. This conversation is filled with grace and empathy for people who have experienced and shared toxic values.

Her artistic portfolio includes a range of work in abstract painting, photography, teaching, writing, speaking. Her workshop and community art experiences challenge others to make space for their own creativity. This conversation was inspiring, and challenges the notion that art has to be a discipline of difficulty instead of a pursuit of passion.

Ana is a project engineer, who happens to speak four languages (NBD,) and has developed a workwear line for women that is designed to break down barriers in STEM industries. Ana came to the US from Southern Germany and has become a space maker for women in STEM. Not satisfied with wearing safety shoes designed for men she took it upon herself to change the entire industry creating Xena Workwear for Women. As she says “What you wear has a major impact on your self-confidence, which in turn impacts a number of other job-related factors, including performance, promotability, and long-term career success.” This conversation is filled with hope and we are so glad Ana the time to sit down with us and share how we can make space for women in male dominated spaces.

I don’t know about you, but I think we all have those friends who make us believe the things we thought were out of reach or impossible are completely attainable, Dana Bakich is one of those people for me. Maybe it's because I have watched the musical Hamilton every day since it came out, but I think the world needs more people like Dana. People who see the unimaginable and are willing to figure out how to create it. She has a "not yet" mentality that makes you believe that you could create anything.

Dana is the founder of "Positive Equation"- a digital consultant for nonprofits, she also has worked on shows like American Idol and in marketing for large marketing firms. All of these different work environments has led her to her second business and passion, HerDesk. A sustainable and functional desk made by and for female entrepreneurs. It has been incredible to watch Dana dream and execute on that dream. Whatever Dana creates she always brings people into the story with partnership and a real desire to amplify the work of others.

There is no denying that 2020 has been the year of disruption- some much needed disruption. As systems of privilege are being called out through the work of Black Lives Matter and Covid 19 is teaching us that our health is tied to each other we are rethinking what community looks like and what leadership in that reality looking like. Something new is being born but we are in the liminal space- the question has become how do you make space for what could be while caring for what is?

This week I am excited to share with you my conversation with Dave Harder and Bryce Dymond two people asking that very question. Dave and Bryce help run a company called “parish properties” which defines its work as driven by concern for the environment, focused on the spiritual health of the community, financial sustainability, and social impact. They help churches think through how to develop their space in a way that is sustainable not just for church community but for the neighborhood they inhabit- this conversation could not be more timely as the idea of gentrification and colonization is rightfully at the forefront of conversation.

We live in a time that is very polarized and differing opinions seem to be suspect. We need to figure out a way forward, but it seems hard to do if we can't even have a conversation, and we debate only happens from behind computer screens. There are people trying to create spaces where differing opinions are not only welcome, but encouraged, and met with curiosity. Pete Enns and Jared Byas are two of these wonderful humans. They are hosts of the podcast “The Bible for Normal People.”

Pete a professor of Biblical Studies, and Jared a former pastor, professor, and entrepreneur have a depth of academic knowledge that most of us only dream about (ok I only dream about, but I am a nerd.) Even with all that academic knowledge and experience, they are able to take the very complex and explain it in approachable ways. Believe it or not people don’t think about the bible in the same way… ok maybe everyone knew that. They make space for people to sit in the tension of differing beliefs in a way that I find inspiring. This conversation was challenging and helpful as we try and navigate vast differences in thought and interpretation. If you haven’t heard their podcast I highly recommend it- even if you aren’t someone who would normally listen to a podcast with the word bible in the name.

A lot of us can relate to a heightened feeling of stress, and general anxiety during this Covid 19 crisis, but for those who already experiencing mental health issues this time may only exacerbated already difficult symptoms. As a culture we have a lot to learn about making spaces for people experiencing mental health difficulties- I hope that this episode with my good friend Rev. Robert W. Lee will inspire great conversation and thought around, how do we make space for ourselves during this difficult time?

Rob is a pastor in North Carolina at Unifor Church- He has also written extensively for both secular and religious news outlets. You may recognize his name because he is the generations removed of General Robert E. Lee and he has used that name to be an activist in the field of racial reconciliation. He participated in the 2017 MTV Video Music awards and was on ABC’s the View where he spoke about the need to confront white supremacy and white privilege in white churches. Rob has written two books one titled “Stained-Glass Millennials” (Smyth and Helwys 2017), his second book “A Sin by Any Other Name.” Rob does all of this while making space for his own mental health as someone diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, and the mental health of others. This conversation is powerful and so important.

The one and only Elyse Snipes. ⁠ This week I am excited to share with you my conversation with Elyse Snipes creator of Radical Wellness Collective. This conversation was so helpful! As an Enneagram four, this lady leads with creativity and authenticity that is nothing short of inspirational.

Elyse is bringing a lot of goodness into the world- she is a licensed marriage and family therapist, hosts a podcast called "Trailercast", and is the Founder of Radical Wellness Collaborative. Radical Wellness Collaborative is an online platform for modern, holistic wellness. She's also an incredibly dynamic speaker and space maker. I am so excited to introduce to you Riley Hall a dear friend of mine, and an incredible designer. Riley "creates space" as a designer in the staging industry. He knows what it takes to make a space seem intentionally styled, but approachable. Our conversation went everywhere from how to lay out a room, to why everyone should have a signature candle.

This show will first air while we are all still experiencing social distancing and sheltering in place during the covid-19 outbreak, and so it may seem weird to talk about gathering spaces but everything we talk about pertains to your personal space- and maybe during this time you can reimagine the gathering spaces we are all going to return to.

Nothing like launching a podcast about the need for proximity while a pandemic is causing us to have to have to distance ourselves, but during this time there are unique ways to continue to “make space” for connection and community that could last longer than the outbreak itself.

This week I talk to Rev. Jeremy Smith. Jeremy is a pastor of a church in Seattle near one of the areas that the CDC has deemed a "hot spot." He and his team had to figure out how to cultivate community during "social distancing" way before the rest of us knew what those two words meant together. No church storage closet is left unturned as we restore, renew, and reconcile. We're talking Queer Eye meets Marie Kondo meets the Vicar of Dibley. (If Chip and Jo want to come too, I won't object.)

We live in a social and political climate that thrives on making us more and more divided. We need proximity and relationships to break down this division, but our most inclusive spaces are often run down and uninviting.... and if we are honest smell a bit like a nursing home.

This podcast will discuss how to transform the spaces where people gather — from churches, to synagogues, to coffee shops — into spaces that are inviting and make people encounter each other in meaningful ways. I bring my eclectic group of friends (think: experts on racial reconciliation and inclusion, musicians, artists, designers, athletes, comedians, actors, rabbis, pastors, drag queens, you know typical church folk) along for the ride to move us from a D.I.Y. culture to a D.I.T. culture -- Do It Together.
