Today, we bring you the enigmatic Florence Given. For the unacquainted, Florence is nothing short of a force to be reckoned with. The 21-year-old feminist illustrator, writer, and activist released her debut book, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty, in June this year, and has gone on to become a number one Sunday Times bestseller. Florence now has a social media following of more than half a million people, and has single-handedly carved out one of the most engaged spaces for the queer community online.

In this chat, we go from Florence’s turbulent high school experience, to what she would change about social media if she was given a chance.

Why hello there!

Today, we bring you the very warm Nakkiah Lui. Nakkiah is a Gamilaroi and Torres Strait Islander woman who writes for both the theatre and television. Nakkiah has co-written and starred in the ABC’s Black Comedy, created and starred in Kiki and Kitty for the ABC, co-hosted the Buzzfeed podcast series Pretty for an Aboriginal, and in 2019, released her debut novel, Black Is The New White. This year, Nakkiah also released her Audible Original Podcast alongside Miranda Tapsell, Debutant: Race, Resistance and Girl Power.

In this chat, we touched on everything: From growing up around community to how she found herself studying a law degree, and the impact her grandma Joan had on her life and career.

Hiiiii lovely people!

Today, we bring you the remarkable Sophie Delezio. If Sophie’s name sounds familiar, you were probably first introduced to her story more than 16 years ago, when a car crashed into Sophie’s daycare centre and trapped Sophie underneath. In that incident, she suffered burns to more than 85% of her body, lost both of her feet, a number of fingers, and an ear. A few years later, Sophie’s life was threatened again by a serious car accident, where, after being thrown from her wheelchair, she obtained an acquired brain injury. In the face of so much adversity, Sophie Delezio is a sunshine-y force to be reckoned with. Now, on the cusp of her twenties, Sophie is a fighter who didn’t just survive, but thrived despite everything that life threw at her.

In this chat we will retrace the two events that shaped Sophie into the incredible person she is today, and how her parents’ and brother’s love nurtured her in even the darkest of moments.

It’s a novel about a young Taiwanese-Australian woman named Jena Lin, who - after being recognised as a prodigy throughout childhood - has re-introduced classical violin back into her life as a 20-something Syndey-sider. We see Jena navigate relationships of all kinds in this book, and how those relationships affect the way she views and treats herself. The novel explores themes like sex, power, desire, and of course, the loneliness Jena can’t quite shake.

Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle discuss it all: From whether you need to like a main character to like a book, to those graphic sex scenes and mysterious, unresolved plotlines.

This month, we’re discussing the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award winner, The Yield, by Tara June Winch. The novel tells the story of a woman who has returned home after the passing of her Poppy, Albert Gondiwindi, and felt like her life had passed her by ever since her sister, Jedda, vanished as a child. August’s perspective is interspersed with that of Albert, via his almost diary-like Wiradjuri dictionary entries, and a letter from 1915, written by the German reverend Ferdinand Greenleaf, who established a mission in Massacre Plains.

Today on the show, Mich, Zara and Annabelle talk about the characters they adored, the scenes most vivid for them, and the importance of the Wiradjuri language.

Today on the show, we bring you the absolutely energising G Flip. G is a drummer-turned-solo-artist, singer songwriter, and music producer, who after uploading her single ‘About You’ to Triple J Unearthed in February 2018, has since become a star. G has performed at music festivals like Splendour in the Grass and One Night Stand to her thousands of fans, and released her debut studio album in August last year.

In this chat, G tells us about realising she was gay when she was just a child, the heartwarming moment her dad joined her on stage last year, as well as navigating a break up publicly amidst the train-wreck of a year that is 2020.

Julia was, of course, the first female Prime Minister of Australia, who is now the Chair of Beyond Blue, one of Australia’s leading mental health awareness bodies. Julia is also an avid advocate for addressing women’s under-representation in leadership, which was the motivation behind the book she just co-authored with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, ‘Women and Leadership’.

In this chat, Julia touches on the frustration that accompanies being a woman in politics, the moment she found out Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump, as well as her absolutely iconic misogyny speech.

On the show this week, we bring you the delightful Brooke Boney. Brooke is a Gamilaroi woman who grew up in Muswellbrook, NSW, and is currently an entertainment reporter on The Today Show. You’ll likely be familiar with her work before that too, as a journalist on NITV, the ABC, and Triple J.

In our interview with Brooke, we cover everything: From what she thought her year was going to look like to how she’s coping in these strange times. Sure, Brooke’s the woman who was blindsided by the country’s next big Bachelor star. But she’s also the woman who’s shown Australia what she’s made of - twice - without a phone, or a wardrobe, or any of the creature comforts that keep you and I sane day-to-day.
