<title>19. SUDS with Adviser Ratings founder Angus Woods, on the rise of fintech, the great tech jobs crisis, paying advisors and mental health for kids</title>
<description>On SUDS, the weekly washup from the Startup Daily show on ausbiz, Simon’s special guest this week is Adviser Ratings founder and CEO Angus Woods. We talk about the great crypto collapse of Three Arrows Capital and Voyager Digital, as well as how Meta brands Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp account for a staggering two-thirds of social media fraud. Angus offers plenty of advice to fellow founders on startup life and we take about the dramatic shift in interest in financial advice amid generational changes and the rise of millennial investors.

From the Startup Daily show this week, we look at the great redundancy and what’s happening to tech jobs.
We spoke to Dan Brockwell at EarlyWork about their new jobs platform for displaced tech workers, and Dexter Cousins, from Tier One People about the signs of tough times ahead, Alan Jones talks about when to give equity to advisors and we meet Sidekicker founder Jackie Bull following a $20m raise, and Dr Louise Metcalf, founder of kids mental health app Gheorg, about how she’s reducing anxiety in children.

<title>18. SUDS with Carbon Unravel founders Grace Sai and Marc Allen: Uncertain startup times, changing climate, how to founder and a giant leap for wine</title>
<description>This week’s special guests are Grace Sai and expat Australian Marc Allen, founders of Singapore-based Unravel Carbon, which helps companies decarbonise rapidly. With grocery delivery startup Voly cutting staff and shelving expansion plans, we discuss what lies ahead for startups.

The pair as in Sydney as part of the City of Sydney’s Visiting Entrepreneur program, a 10-day festival of 17 events, on now. We talk about their journey (they met at one of Sai’s previous startup ventures), the future climate tech and the planet, and hear from another visiting entrepreneur, HYPR’s Tim Kentley Klay, who was on the Startup Daily show this week talking artificial intelligence and founder mindset.

This week we also spoke to Mandalay Ventures cofounder Mark Gustowski about their NRMA-backed $50 million agtech VC fund.

And combining the environmental theme with innovation and a favourite subject, wine, we spoke to Mitchell Taylor from family-owned Taylor’s Wines, about their new One Small Step range, which comes in recycled PET bottles that are 83% lighter than glass, and take up 30% less space, cutting transport and energy emissions. A giant leap we’ll raise a glass to.

<description>This week's special guest on SUDS is Jodie Imam, co-founder &amp; COO, Tractor Ventures. We discuss the ongoing slump in tech stocks and what it means for startup valuations and the Tractor funding model. Our big idea is women investing in female founders.

From this week’s shows we hear from SBE Australia CEO Nicole Cook about the impact awards for female founders.

Dr Sara Crowe, founder of impact startup the 4eyesVision Foundation, shares her inspirational idea to help the 1 billion people globally who are vision impaired simply because they lack access to affordable eye tests and glasses.

Duncan Anderson co-founder of edtech startup Edrolo shared his plans in the wake of a $40 million Series B raise.

And Stela Solar, the new head of the National AI Centre is travelling around the country on listening tour, and told us about Australia’s potential in AI.

<title>16. Back to work, founder health, accelerator changes &amp; investing in female founders</title>
<description>This week our special guest is Right Click Capital’s Ben Chong, who reveals his childhood entrepreneurship, and offers advice on how founders can prepare for tough times ahead and look after themselves.

We also look at Elon Musk’s edict for execs to return to the office.

From this week’s show, we talk about why Skalata Ventures changed the model for its accelerator and investment model with Wahid Tashkandi.

Aussie Angels CEO Cheryl Mack talks about how thecurrent investment rules are discriminating against female founders and how to change things.
Former Canva exec Gary Zurnamer spotted an opportunity and left the design giant to launch the video platform Vouch, which now counts Canva among its clients. He’s just raised $8 million in a Series B and talked about his plans.

Simon Steele is solving a major pain point for anyone who’s ever grappled with taking meeting notes (or forgotten to) and shares how his Adelaide startup MinuteMe is saving companies time and money.

<title>15. NFTs go ape, the troubles with crypto, the end of demo day, tech's election reaction</title>
<description>Welcome to the new, improved SUDS!

We’ve tweaked the format and each week host Simon Thomsen will have a special guest join him to discuss the big news of the week, tell their story and also tackle the big issue in their area of expertise, before we run through the highlights of the show for the week.

We kick off the podcast SUDS with Lisa Wade, CEO, of ASX-listed DigitalX, the world's first publicly listed blockchain technology company, founded in 2014.

We look at actor and producer Seth Green’s misfortune after he was sucked in by a phishing scheme and lost three Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, including one he based a new TV show on. We meet Lisa and hear about her career and DigitalX, then look at the fall out from TerraUSD collapse as well as JP Morgan’s announcement that Bitcoin is their preferred “alternative” investment.

From the Startup Daily show this week, we hear from Main Sequence Ventures partner Phil Morle on where to next for startup accelerators - and why demo day should be cancelled.

Evoke Ag has just raised $50 million to help agriculture manage its carbon emissions on the path to net zero. Founder Dr Anastasia Volkova joined us from the US, also sharing the extraordinary story of helping her Ukraine-based mother escape Russia’s war on her birthplace, where many of her team, friends and family remain.

And with the guard changed at The Lodge, we spoke to Will Richardson from VC Giant Leap and Ron Cauci, CEO of AIIA, for reactions from the tech sector to the election of the Albanese government.

<title>13. Unstablecoins, the crypto crash, GD1 backs Web3, a plea for political vision</title>
<description>It’s been a tough week for tech stocks and crypto, as well as investors, with US VC giant Tiger Global seeing US$17bn in hedge fund losses (SoftBank’s down $26bn). But that’s nothing company to algorithmic stablecoin Terra USD’s meltdown, Coinbase’s losses and the plunge more broadly in cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin dipping under US$27,000.

On the show this week, we spoke to JD Silva from Geminio, who outlined 4 key reasons for the Terra and Luna collapse. Silva also explained why it will happen again and the problems with the Terra model. Sticking with crypto, the first crypto ETFs launched in Australia this week, and with an election looming and Labor ahead in the polls, we spoke to NSW Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg, a key advocate for embracing digital assets in Australia, about the way ahead for his proposals.

Meanwhile, New Zealand VC Global from Day 1 (GD1) is building a US$5m crypto fund to back DeFi, DAOs, NFTs, web3 and crypto infrastructure. GD1 partner Vignesh Kumar, and the fund’s partner Nawaz Ahmed took us through their plans.

The problem with 3-year election cycles is they can lead to short term thinking. Cicada Innovations CEO Sally-Ann Williams joined us to talk about thinking big and her hopes for the nation, innovation and a long term vision, explaining why it’s so important to our success.

<title>12. Tech responds on women’s rights, MCB v AGL, how to raise $100m, what to do with fugly fruit</title>
<description>The big local news this week was Mike Cannon-Brookes making a $650 million move on Australia’s biggest energy supplier, AGL, in a campaign to stop the ASX-listed company’s demerger plan. Meanwhile, a leak from the US Supreme Court on a controversial ruling around the country’s abortion laws has resulted in widespread protest, but interesting, big tech companies are already putting polities in place to support the choices women want to make about their reproductive rights.

On the show this week, we spoke with Phil Morle from Main Sequence about the hard conversation a VC has to have - telling founders they’ve backed that they won’t be part of the next funding round. Sticking with venture capital, we also caught up with Brian Collins from Startupbootcamp, which is raising $5 million for a new fund to back up to 30 fintechs over the next 3 years with a focus on sustainability.

Skedulo founder Matt Fairhurst took us behind the strategy for the company’s $100 million Series C round, led by SoftBank.

Did you know that 25% of produce never leaves the farm because supermarkets deem it not pretty enough. Richard Tourino is looking to solve this food waste problem with his fruit and veg delivery startup, Good &amp; Fugly, and told us about the problem. But the other problem with delivery to home is things get stolen and couriers struggle with dropping off parcels safely. One Key Access is looking to solve that. After raising $1 million in a pre-Seed round, co-founder Chanel Costabir explains how.

<itunes:summary>The big local news this week was Mike Cannon-Brookes making a $650 million move on Australia’s biggest energy supplier, AGL, in a campaign to stop the ASX-listed company’s demerger plan.

<title>11. Twitter tussles, the great Ape robbery, universities transforming innovation and art NFTs</title>
<description>Perhaps the best reaction amid a million takes on Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover this week was employee Ned Miles, who tweeted “Can someone just tell me if I’m rich or fired please”. We discuss some of the concerns around the Technoking of Tesla ruling the town square.

Then there’s the Bored Ape Yacht Club Instagram hack that saw millions of dollars worth of NFTs stolen.
On the show this week, we spoke to Western Sydney Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover about the role unis play in the startup ecosystem in the wake of a new report that puts NSW at the forefront of the tech and innovation sector nationally.

Speaking of NFTs, Vivid Sydney curator Lucy Keeler has co-founded an online Australian contemporary art gallery exhibiting curated NFTs with artists such as Archibald Prize winner Wendy Sharpe stepping into the digital realm for the first time.

Meanwhile, crypto is a double-edged sword in Russia’s war in Ukraine, and Janine Grange from Crypto Easy looked at the upsides and downsides and who’s responsible for policy when it comes to a response and sanctions.

But Twitter became the news and we spoke to Lewis Mitchell, Professor of Data Science, at University of Adelaide, about why adding an edit button to the platform is not as easy as you think and the potential for malicious actors to exploit it.

And Startup Daily regular Gavin Appel from Ignition Lane also shared his thoughts on living with disruption when a billionaire makes an offer too good to refuse for your tech company.

<title>10. Tesla zooms, Netflix falls, being a great CEO, deep tech investing &amp; how to focus</title>
<description>While Elon Musk’s attention has been on Twitter, it’s been a good week for his side hustle, Tesla, which released its Q1 2022 earnings this week, with revenue up 81% on 12 months ago to US$18.76 billion. He’s set to get a share bonus worth almost as much as a result. Meanwhile the gloss is off Netflix, which saw its share price plummet after reporting 200,000 users unsubscribed in Q1, the first fall in a decade.

On the show this week, we spoke to Guy Hedley from Stoic VC about his concerns that the investment community is overlooking deep tech and other long-term investments with the potential to transform the world. Regular and fellow deep tech investor Phil Morle from Main Sequence explored what it takes and what you need to do to be a great CEO, including that moment as a founder when you replace yourself. Hotwire Australia's Drew Usher and University of Sydney's Dr Stacey Brennan have been looking at the branding of listed tech companies and it seems they love blue and don’t really stand out from the crowd. We spoke to them about their new report on better branding for success.

Focus is another way to succeed and Marie Ng, founder of productivity app Llama Life shared her story as California investor Jason Calacanis backed the startup’s pre-seed raise. And Summer Petrosius, founder of Kindship, told us about her social networking app built by and exclusively for parents raising children with disabilities, delays, and neurodiversity.

<title>9. Days of our Musk, VC red flags, how to hustle and make better board decisions</title>
<description>The world’s greatest tech soap opera, Days of our Musk, continued, with the Tesla boss joining the Twitter board, then not.

Meanwhile, Twitter shareholders have launched legal action over Elon Musk allegedly failing to disclose for 10 days when he hit the 5% threshold for a stake in Twitter. And researchers have been looking at the role pro-Tesla bots on Twitter have played in helping shape perceptions of the EV car maker.

On the show this week, we had great advice from Main Sequence Ventures partner Phil Morle about red flags for VCs in founder pitches, while Right Click Capital’s Ben Chong shared his insights from board meetings in the US and how to work through and prioritise director issues.

Airtasker is celebrating 10 years and founder and CEO Tim Fung shared the leadership lessons he’s learned over that decade.

On the raise front, hype commerce startup EQL bagged $25 million. Co-founder Andrew Lipp shared how the idea came into being after a cold email to Nike.

<title>8. Fast fail, Musk’s Twitter play, women investing in women, Thankyou founder on changing philanthropy</title>
<description>The big tech news this week involves expat Australian entrepreneur Domm Holland and the failure of his Stripe-backed payments startup, Fast, in just 3 years, despite having raised $120 million just 12 months ago. Meanwhile, the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is spending up big on Twitter, taking a 9.2% stake and a seat on the board ahead of a potential showdown with the social media site’s CEO Parag Agrawal.
On the Startup Daily TV show this week, we looking at funding female founders, with Lauren Fung from Auckland-based VC Icehouse Ventures talking about its $20 million ArcAngels Fund II, which will invest exclusively in female-founded and led ventures.

There’s also crowdfunding coming for women with PledgeMe Australia rebooting and rebranding as Microwd, focusing on CSF campaigns for female founders. Megan Owen from Findley Capital joined us to explain why.
Finding somewhere to live can be a challenge, especially for older women and Melbourne startup The Room Xchange is hoping to fix that. Founder Ludwina Dautovic joined us to explain how the platform helps find the right housemate and its new ID verification.

And Thankyou founder Daniel Flynn has a new campaign focus when it comes to philanthropy. He joined us to explain “Donor Dysfunction” and how he’s changing things, including at his social impact venture.

<description>It’s April 1, but the joke’s on Apple and Meta, after being fooled into handing over customer data by hackers who pretended to be law enforcement authorities to convince two of the world’s biggest tech companies to comply. We also talk about the massive crypto theft that saw an attacker steal US$625 m worth of crypto from the blockchain underlying crypto game Axie Infinity.

The focus this week was on the federal budget, with mixed responses from a range of industry peak bodies and experts. Among those commenting were Tech Council of Australia CEO Kate Pounder who praised the government’s focus on upskilling workers in tech as well as funding to bring more women into the sector. But Fintech Australia CEO Andrew Porter was left asking “where is the love?” for his membership. And Jack Qi from William Buck gave the 2022 budget a C-, down from last year’s B-, for startups, suggesting some cheap and easy measures that could make a big difference.

With Labor turning to the uni sector for solutions and Blackbird boss Niki Scevak critical of the move, we spoke to David Burt from UNSW Founders and Murray Hurps from UTS Startups about the role unis play in the ecosystem.

And in a big win for the video games sector, Senator Jane Hume joined us to talk about the new Digital Games Tax Offset and her love for the industry.

<title>6. Labor’s jobs plan, tech’s rich list, Groks save Australia, the DAO threat &amp; Curtis Stone’s startup play</title>
<description>On this week’s SUDS, we discuss Labor’s election promise to collaborate with the Tech Council of Australia in creating 340,000 new tech jobs by 2030. Is it ambitious enough?

And The Australian’s The List, detailing the nation’s 250 richest people is out, with tech making its move, from the Canva and Atlassian founders in the top 10, to Afterpay’s co-founders. Among 131 billionaires, around 10% made their fortune in tech.

On the show, we spoke to Dr James Curran from Grok Academy, the charity educating the next generation in tech and cybersecurity following a simulated cyber attack that enlisted 10,000 school children to repel it.

And we met a future tech billionaire in high school student Nick Mihailou, who, at age 16, is running his second startup, the app building company Appstra. His equity in other startups has made him a paper millionaire as he juggles studying with being a founder and investor.

And with Blockchain Australia Week underway, we spoke to Senator Andrew Bragg following his opening address in which he described DAOs (decentralised autonomous organisations) as “an existential threat to the taxation system” about the issues. He also broke the news as it happened that Treasurer Josh Frydenberg had released the Terms of Reference for a review into the taxation of digital transactions and assets such as cryptocurrency.

Meanwhile, Jodie Mlikota, founder and CEO Gathar, the “Airbnb of dinner parties”, has enlisted LA-based expat Australian chef Curtis Stone to help the Queensland startup expand into the US market.

And RocketLab founder Peter Beck has backed New Zealand audio capture startup Dotterel Technologies in a $2.8m raise for its microphone tech, which captures clear sound over long distances. Founder CEO Shaun Edlin told us about their ambitions and the incredible tech involved.

<title>5. UK jail plan for Facebook execs, Sun Cable powers up, advice for founders, taxing NFTs</title>
<description>This week on the SUDS podcast, we discussed new UK laws that could see execs from tech companies such as Facebook and TikTok facing jail for offences such as failing to take down content.

Meanwhile, the crypto industry was relieved when the European parliament voted against banning proof-of-work-based cryptocurrencies in the EU. But mining still faces the threat of being declared unsustainable, blocking investment.

On the Startup Daily show on ausbiz.com.au, we spoke to Lucy Cooke, founder of visual logistics startup SpaceDraft. The former film production manager on blockbusters Game of Thrones and Harry Potter films gave her product to teenage students to test. She explains why.

Dream don’t get much bigger than Sun Cable’s $30 billion plan to supply solar power from Australia to Singapore. Tech and mining billionaires Mike Cannon-Brookes and Dr Andrew Forrest backed the plan again in a $210 billion Series B. Founder and CEO David Griffin told us about the potential to replicate the idea where it’s needed.

Kiwi serial entrepreneur Jon Kalaugher’s latest venture, Flowingly, a process mapping &amp; workflow automation platform, raised $4.5 million in Pre-Series A. When we asked him how startup founders should tackle their idea, Jon's advice was brilliant.

We also spoke with Gaurav Kawar, founder of the Melbourne-based marketplace Book An Artist, which is backed by Airtasker co-founder Tim Fung. Think of it like Airbnb if you need an artist. He told the funny story of how the idea came into being.
And are you an NFT investor? Did you know you they attract GST? The ATO has turned its attention to taxing Non-Fungible Tokens and Alex Zinzopoulos from William Buck offered his advice on navigating the complexities of minting, buying and selling NFTs.

<title>4. Hybrid work, BNPL consolidation, crypto’s regulated future, the edtech revolution and female founders and investors step up for IWD</title>
<description>It’s back to the office for Google staff from April 4, but staff will be able to do their job from home at least two days each week, the tech giant decided. We talk about the hybrid work models being embraced by companies. Meanwhile BNPL market leader Klarna posted a net loss of nearly A$1 billion last year. With BNPL stock prices plunging, margins shrinking and growth slowing, is consolidation of the sector on the cards?

Speaking of consolidation, Senator Andrew Bragg spoke to us about the impact of regulation on the crypto market, saying he believes the current 600 crypto exchanges could shrink to 20 or 30 once government regulation kicks in. He also shared his views on the exchanges refusing to cease trade in Russia.

Peter Goldsworthy, GM of startups at LaunchVic told us about the 30x30 program, which is looking to help turn 30 scaleup companies into unicorns (worth $1bn) by 2030.

Omar de Silva, founder of global edtech startup FourthRev took us through how he tackled raising $11.2 million in a Series A from global investors.

For International Women’s Day, we spoke to Aprill Allen from Tractor Ventures, the revenue-based financing alternative for startups about her investing journey and why so many couples-led startups turn to Tractor for capital. And Stella Cocaro, co-founder of proptech startup Canibuild shared her advice for women getting into non-traditional sectors after her startup raised $8 million.

<title>3. Crypto's freedom stance, Russia's cyber war, VC funding boom, climate tech &amp; female founders lead the way</title>
<description>As the world responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine with a wave of sanctions and financial restrictions, cryptocurrency exchanges struck a blow for freedom by rejecting Ukraine’s calls to block Russian users. As the sector comes under increasing scrutiny from regulators, where does the sector’s stand leave its social licence?

Guests on the show this week included cybersecurity expert Paul Haskell-Dowland from Edith Cowan University, who said Russia sees cyber attacks as a valid weapon of war, with the Ukraine conflict as the first time cyber warfare as a “viable option”. Australia and the rest of the world is in danger of becoming collateral damage, so we asked him how businesses and people can protect themselves.

Meanwhile, the NAB is looking to employ 1500 people for tech roles in 2022. We spoke to the bank’s manager of technology careers, Jade Warrener, about the company’s plans and career progression for anyone who signs on.

Two key themes emerged on the Startup Daily show this week. First it was VC funding with Alister Coleman from Folklore Ventures talking us through a new report released by the VC into the state of startup investment in Australia. Fintech led the way in 2021 but now investors are taking a close look at climate tech, crypto and Web3.
Ahead of International Women’s Day next Tuesday, March 8, we spoke to the founders of two female-led startups following capital raises.

Carbon emissions tracking ventures Trace has raised $1.5 million as it looks to help SMEs manage their emissions. Co-founder Cat Long explained how hybrid work models may not be good for the environment.

And Stylerunner co-founder Sali Sasi is back with a new venture, Her Black Book, which just raised $1.6 million. We spoke to her about going back into business with her twin sister, Julie, the lessons learned from Stylerunner and a decade on, if there’s been a shift in the mindset of investors looking at startups led by women.

<itunes:summary>As the world responded to Russia's invasion of Ukraine with a wave of sanctions and financial restrictions, cryptocurrency exchanges struck a blow for freedom by rejecting Ukraine’s calls to block Russian users.

<title>2. The Cannon-Brookes power play, cleaning up oceans &amp; how a Cuppa can save lives</title>
<description>In episode two of SUDS, the weekly wrap from Startup Daily TV, we look at the cyberwar danger as Russia invades Ukraine, the couple who became millionaires selling NFT portraits of women to lonely men for thousands of dollars as part of our global wrap.

This week on the show, we spoke with Tom McMahon from the Tech Council of Australia about how tech jobs not only offer better pay, the gender pay gap is lower and diversity is greater as he reveals the details in a new report on tech jobs.

And two years after Nick Chiarelli co-founded Ocean Impact Organisation, the venture has revealed ambitious plans to back 100 startups in the next five years to help improve the world's oceans. With ocean health inextricably linked to climate change, Ocean Impact has launched a new accelerator program and venture capital arm to back those startups.

The big news this week was Atlassian boss Mike Cannon-Brookes launching an audacious $5 billion takeover for AGL in a bid to close its coal-fired power stations sooner. We spoke with Dr Bruce Mountain, director, Victorian Energy Police Centre, who said he has great confidence in private capital and entrepreneurs to solve Australia's energy transition challenges, about the forces at play when billionaires set out to change the world.

Finally, mental health has been a big issue, especially during the pandemic. When Luke "Cookie" Cook lost his startup during the Covid lockdowns, he found himself in a dark place. Then he decided to do something about it and help others too, launching Cuppa.tv. A conversation can change your life and in a moving conversation with him, Cookie shared his story and hopes for Cuppa to help others change their lives for the better too.

<title>1. From Metamates to sextech and using AI to find your talents</title>
<description>On the inaugural edition of SUDS, the new weekly wrap of the best interviews from Startup Daily TV, we talk global and local tech, from the cryto ads at the Superbowl, to Mark Zuckerberg’s latest changes at Meta, including calling staff Metamates.

Then there’s the news that Paypal and Palintir co-founder and Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel, who’s stepping down from the Meta board, has invested US$1.5 million into a dating app for conservative people to find love, called The Right Stuff.

Speaking of Sextech, we caught up with Professor Kath Albury from Swinburne University ahead of a three-day virtual Sex Tech Hackathon. She told us that better dating apps are a key focus, and revealed that hacking of connected sex toys has led to some eye-watering moments.

And with eight startups scoring grants from the ACT government’s innovation program, Petr Adamek, CEO of the Canberra Innovation Network, explained how it works and also explained why the national capital is “one of the best cities in the world” for changemakers, and innovators (especially after the politicians go home on the weekend).

Misha Schubert, CEO of Science &amp; Technology Australia took us through the successes of the Superstars of STEM program, which has seen 150 remarkable women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics inspire the next generations of girls and young women into these crucial fields. The federal government has just backed the program with an additional $2 million, so 120 more brilliant and diverse women in STEM can turbo-charge their media profiles and career success over the next four years.

On the crowdfunding front, we caught up with Western Australian startup Australian Honey Ventures, which is selling its medicinal honey in the Middle East at up to $750 a kilo, about its Birchal raise, which nabbed $1 million in 30 minutes. Its backers include rugby and Bachelor star Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins, and we asked CEO Jay Curtin how he became involved.
