The Trojan men finished the regular season dropping their final seven games after suffering a pair of humbling losses to West Coast foes, falling by 19 points at Washington after holding a three-point lead at halftime and then getting blown out by 21 against UCLA with way too much baby blue cheering in the Galen Center. On the women's side, USC dropped its fourth straight game with a disappointing single-game showing in the Big Ten Tournament, falling to Washington by 12 points after the Women of Troy scored just 20 points in the first half.

The Women of Troy finished the regular season dropping their final three games after their worst loss of the season, giving up a career-high 40 points to Kiyomi McMiller and falling on the road at Penn State before losing at home against No. 2 UCLA after giving up 22 offensive rebounds. On the men's side, things have been even worse as the Trojans dropped their fourth and fifth consecutive games the last week, including losing by 19 points to UCLA and then giving up 51 second-half points to let No. 12 Nebraska rally from a halftime deficit and roll to an easy victory.

But the bigger news came the day after the Huskers handed USC's men their fifth straight loss when the athletic department released a statement that active leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara was no longer a member of the program.

The USC Triple-Double looks at all the latest in the Triple-Double segment before taking a look at where the USC men's and women's teams stand at this point in the season, seeing where they stack up in the standings and what is the latest bracketology involving the Trojans.

The boys of Helium skip on the pleasantries and jump straight into the spring preview of the defensive side in the following order: specialists, defensive tackles, defensive ends, linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties. 

USC's defense is full of questions as Hall of Fame head coach Gary Patterson takes over the coordinator duties. Though he uses a similar 4-2-5 defense to what the Trojans frequently used under former defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, what personnel will Patterson prefer and utilize in each of those 11 defensive positions. That's one of the things that makes this spring so intriguing as we yearn to decipher exactly what Patterson and his defensive coaching staff may be looking for from each position.

The spring defense also presents some interesting opportunities for some of the youngsters, including the freshman from the No. 1-ranked recruiting class, because of some injuries that will keep some expected starters from being full participants. Who will step up amongst the young players? And who will show the biggest improvements from the returners?

The Trojans' starting pitching was again electric as Mason Edwards, Grant Govel and Andrew Johnson all three were spectacular and Chase Herrell joined the mix with five scoreless innings on Thursday.

The Trojans nearly had their second no-hitter of the season as Edwards and Sax Matson combined to throw TEN hitless innings Friday, but the game remained scoreless until the top of the 11th inning when USC broke the game open with six runs. That left the only question being whether the Trojans could get the final three outs before Cal Poly could get its first hit. They fell one pitch shy. Freshman Diego Velazquez got the first out but a grounder up the middle bounced off second base and out of the grasp of a sliding Covarrubias for an infield single. On the next pitch, Velazquez got a ground ball for a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

After being bottled up Friday, USC's bats responded in a big way, pounding out 21 hits and scoring 16 runs -- both season highs -- while Govel again was outstanding on the mound despite giving up his first earned run of the season on a solo homer late in his seven-inning start. The Sunday matchup appeared to be going similarly to the dominant performances USC had shown the rest of the weekend until the ninth inning. After Johnson had been lights out, allowing one run on four hits in 6.2 innings, the Trojans held a 6-1 lead going into the ninth inning. That's when the Mustangs finally showed some life, scoring five runs with the help of a two-out error to tie the game and send it into extra innings for the second time in the series. The 10th inning remained scoreless, but USC burst through with a pair of runs in the 11th and freshman Gavin Lauridsen closed it out for the 8-6 win to complete the sweetp.

The Trojans' weekend starters did collectively give up their first run of the season but only combined to give up one while striking out 28 over 17 innings. USC's bats didn't have the same proficiency as they tallied only 13 runs on 18 hits over the three-game series, but they did enough to put the Trojans in position to stay unbeaten this season.

Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action and look forward to the upcoming matchups after they talk with USC assistant coach Sergio Brown, who talks about moving back into an on-field instruction role after being the director of player development the last three years for the Trojans.

Sandwiching the dominant 11-0 display on Saturday were a pair of close victories for USC as it won the season opener 3-1 and then locked up the sweep Sunday with an 8-5 victory over the Pepperdine. In each game, the Trojans got elite starting pitching, allowing just three hits over three starts and 16 innings.

Patterson went 181-79 as head coach of TCU, and he was the Horned Frogs' defensive coordinator for three years before taking over as head coach. Additionally, Patterson has coached defensive backs and linebackers in his career.

"As a Hall of Fame coach, who is one of the game's most highly regarded defensive minds, he brings a wealth of success and experience to our program. Patterson was the defensive play caller as TCU's head coach, and he ran a unique 4-2-5 defensive scheme that used a versatile nickelback.

USC gave up a 35-yard touchdown on a third-and-20 play in overtime to lose. The Trojans were severely undermanned, but still had multiple chances to win before collapsing. 

Jayden Maiava completed 18-of-30 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. King Miller rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, and Tanook Hines caught six passes for 163 yards. Both USC's offense and defense had chances to land knockout blows and couldn't. 

Ryon Sayeri made a 22-yard field goal on USC's first offensive possession of overtime, which put the Trojans ahead 30-27. But then USC's defense couldn't get a stop after pinning back TCU to a third-and-20 play. Horned Frog quarterback Kenny Seals threw a screen pass to Jeremy Payne, and Payne broke multiple tackles along the left sideline en route to scoring the game-winning touchdown. Seals earned Player of the Game honors after throwing for 258 yards, one touchdown and one interception. 

The loss drops USC to 9-4 on the season and kickstarts an offseason where the Trojans will need to find a new defensive coordinator after D'Anton Lynn left to take the same position at Penn State.

Chris opens up the 'Two-Minute Drill' that's actually a statement for the feedback he received from his Two-Minute Drill from last week. Shotgun uses his tine to discuss junior wide receiver Makai Lemon taking home the Biletnikoff Award over the weekend. Lemon caught 79 passes for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games. Lemon also rushed for two touchdowns, and he threw a touchdown pass. Lemon's 90.4 overall offensive grade from Pro Football Focus led all FBS wide receivers this season, and his 1,156 receiving yards were the most among Power Four wideouts. Lemon's 20 forced missed tackles tied for sixth among all wide receivers nationally, and he caught 10 of his 15 contested targets.

In the second half of the show, Chris and Shotgun look at the Iowa Hawkeyes, coming off a narrow 18-16 loss at home to No. 7 Oregon. The Trojans will welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes to the Coliseum for the first time since 1976, which was a 55-0 blowout win for USC. This will be their first ever meeting as Big Ten opponents. This will be a rematch of the 2019 Holiday Bowl in San Diego where Iowa dominated in the second half to a 49-24 win.

For the last six seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. But we've never attempted an in-season re-rank, so this was a little bit of a new endeavor building off a familiar foundation.

As always, each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings factor in a number of items including positional depth, prior stats, overall talent, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCfootball.com rankings.

There were some notable high risers, including the tight ends who have been much bigger weapons than we anticipated. The podcasting duo talk with the lone scholarship returner from last season as Terrance Williams II joins the show to talk about his road to recovery from a broken scaphoid -- a small boat-shaped bone located in the wrist -- suffered last year during a game at Oregon. Williams discusses the trials and tribulations he endured during his rehab for an injury he initially thought would only require a short recovery and allow him to get back on the court by the end of the 2024-25 season.

Williams talks about his relationship with Musselman and how it led to him returning to USC despite the rest of the roster departing. He also discusses his role as a leader this season and what the 6-foot-7 wing has seen from this year's roster as he's slowly worked his way back onto the court, though he's still yet to be 100 percent cleared for full contact.

After a break, Shotgun and Connor discuss what they've seen from a couple of recent practices since the Trojans have returned for training camp in the lead up to the 2025-26 season. They look at how the roster has developed since first being assembled and debate what the starting lineup could look like.

Trevino and Spratling dive into their 'Two-Minute Drill' with the former taking time to talk about the emotions of seeing Helton once again in the Coliseum while Spratling takes the time to show some extra love for senior defensive end Anthony Lucas recording the first two sacks of his career. 

The Helium Boys dive into their Stock Up, Stock Down segment, which includes USC's offensive line, the running back room, the duo of Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane and the Trojans' early sack production. 

The Helium Boys then dive into the second half of the show to preview Purdue, which represent USC's Big Ten opener and first road game of the season. This is a reunion game for a multitude of reasons: USC starting QB Jayden Maiava played under Odom at UNLV in 2023, guiding them to the Mountain West Championship game. Former USC offensive line coach and offensive coordinator Josh Henson left the Trojans this offseason to be the offensive coordinator with the Boilermakers. Henson was part of Lincoln Riley's initial staff in 2022. Former USC wide receiver Charles Ross was on the team but was forced to medically retire. Former USC and Georgia wideout Michael Jackson III is one of the top contributors.

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast to discuss USC's 73-13 beatdown of Missouri State to improve to 1-0 on the year.

For the last six seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. Each year under Lincoln Riley, the USC roster has seen significant turnover each year making it a bit of a guessing game trying to figure out who is going to play and how valuable they are going to be toward the team's success, so we've incorporated a re-rank when the Trojans' football team makes the transition from fall camp to game preparation in the week leading up to the season opener.

Each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2024 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast to break down USC's Week 1 opponent: Missouri State, which will be making its debut at the FBS level. 

The show kicks off with the patented 'Two-Minute Drill' with Trevino commenting on Lincoln Riley's comments on Trojans Live about the starting lineup along the offensive line. Shotgun talks about his excitement for the start of the season, and his hurried travel plans this past weekend in Georgia. 

The Helium Boys then take their first official preview of the 2025 season with Missouri State. Missouri State wasn't a world beater at the FCS level with just four playoff appearances since 1989 and a 30-26 record since 2020. The Bears are projected to be among the bottom of Conference USA with a win projection between 5.4-6.7 per ESPN's Football Power Index. 

It's been an emotional offseason for the Bears program after the death of senior safety ⁠Todric McGee⁠ in spring from an accidental gunshot wound. McGee was projected to be a starter in the secondary, leaving a huge loss in the defense and program.

Wingfield's loss is a significant blow for USC as the Redondo Beach (Calif.) Redondo Union grad was projected to be the starting left guard this fall. The Trojans will now likely turn to either Tobias Raymond or Micah Banuelos -- two players with one combined start between them in their college careers -- to fill the position. 

It's no surprise that both hosts spend their 'Two-Minute Drill' on the Wingfield situation and where USC goes from here as an offensive line. Chris and Shotgun spend the first half of the show breaking down some of the ongoing battles and big question marks up front.

Stankiewicz talks about the Trojans' disappointment with their final two games after being in the Corvallis Regional final and what he talked about with the players after the final game. He also discusses the building blocks the team continues to stack brick by brick as it tries to re-establish itself as one of college baseball's premier programs.
