Setting Boundaries Through Self-Defense

Be The Hero and Rescue Yourself talks about true self-defense starts with learning how to set healthy boundaries. Chris Cagle a Black Belt and owner of Fight Right Martial Arts in Lake Dallas, Texas shares his views on how he teaches self-defense to adults and children. He believes it all starts with loving yourself enough to set healthy boundaries and when those lines are crossed how to love yourself enough to protect yourself. Chris teaches my family and many more martial arts, but his message is love and encouragement because that is what everyone needs at the end of the day. Listen in on how to talk to your kids about bullying at school and even learn how to overcome those adult bullies too!

Find Your Purpose?! Why is it so hard to find our purpose in life?

Why is it so hard to find our "true" purpose in life? I truly believe we all have a purpose in life and finding it has been a hot topic these days and if you don't know your purpose you are doing something wrong. Honestly, I think we are asking the wrong questions! Also, our understanding of what our "true" purpose is has been warped by what others think our purpose should be, what social media says it should be and too many times attaching it to things or our career. The true search is not for our purpose it is the search for yourself and knowing who you truly are.

How can being Vulnerable help race in America?

As we watch so many emotions scatter across our news feed on social media, the news or even our own friends. We often ask the question, why are people so angry? Anger itself is a secondary emotion to what is really going on in our world. It is a sign that something in our lives is not the way we think it should be and we feel powerless to change it. People right now during Covid-19 and civil unrest feel powerless to change their circumstance or improve the lives of their community. So as humans we turn to anger instead of digging deep in our emotions and allowing the true strength of vulnerability help us unpack those emotions. My guest today is Sheryl English and we discuss vulnerability and the power to tell your story can help move past the anger and allows us to find true answers. Vulnerability in walking in your truth allows us to open our eyes to others so we can move forward TOGETHER!

How to cope with loss and see the blessings?

As we walk through the next few months or years of the Covid19 pandemic; loss is something we all are trying to work through. Loss of loved ones, loss of our jobs, loss of freedom in doing the things we are used to doing daily, and loss of our identity in so many ways. How can we get through loss, understand how denial can be unhealthy, fake acceptance can be dangerous and how can we see some of the blessings through all of this craziness. I invited my neighbor Nakia Mohair who I have always felt had an amazing perspective on loss and created her own blog It is Well to help others who need a little encouragement.

Leadership Lessons: Why YOU still report to a crappy leader or manager?

We see it all of the time in articles stating that people don't leave companies they leave bad managers. We also know those statics that a good leader who focuses on the people plus the strategy to get to their revenue goals outperform other companies all day long. So why do you still report to a crappy leader? Here are my top 3 thoughts that I have seen over the year in leadership roles, and working with Disney advising companies on how to improve their employee experience. It is all about balance in leadership and what they focus on the most... results or people.

As we continue our lockdown and our kids are home from school for what it looks like the rest of the school year. I decided to interview my son to see how he is dealing with the lockdown, what he misses and what he is grateful for as well. I hope this gives you some insight into how resilient our kids are... how we worry so much about how they are handling all of this. They are stronger than you think. Be Sweet Yall!

The wonderful thing about growing a little older is that it was like a switch was flipped when I turned forty. I call it the “I don’t give a flying flip what people think of me anymore!” switch, and it is kind of fun! I have a good friend of mine, Cynthia, who said it so well one day at our coffee spot one afternoon. She said, “We spend our twenties clueless of who we are and thinking “stuff ” will make us happy, our thirties we kind of know, but still not sure, in our forties, we have finally decided what we like and don’t like, and we are not afraid to let people know it .”How did I get there and why do we start caring in the first place? Listen to my newest podcast to find out how I learned that we are all perfectly imperfect and how to embrace every part of yourself.

Learn more about your ad choices.

Today I invited my son back and his best friend Thomas to talk about bullying in middle school. How does it affect you physically and mentally? I ask the question if cyberbullying really happens and what can we do to help our friends get through the tough times. Welcome to Be The Hero podcast! I get the chance to interview my heroes I have met over the years and share with you the lessons they have taught me. Which gave me the power to put on my OWN Cape and rescue myself.

Leadership Lessons: The Brownie Box

We have the data to prove that engaged employees increase production. Executives will admit that an engaged employee base increases retention and creates a culture that attracts good talent. Why do we still see a large percentage of employees not engaged and doing the bare minimum? Well, maybe because their leaders are doing the bare minimum when it comes to filling their brownie box. This episode is for my leaders who want to understand what it takes to leade a group of engaged employees and why retaining employees is key to sustaining your culture. It is time to bake some brownies leaders and do more than giving them a paycheck and a place to work!

Super Bowl Reaction: Why I have mixed feelings...

I truly had mixed feelings about the Super Bowl Halftime show for many reasons. As a woman in her 40's, I was impressed with how Shakira and Jennifer Lopez owned that stage. It is refreshing to see that women in their 40's and 50's are still seen as beautiful and sexy. On the other side, I have to think of how many young girls feel they have to dance, dress and look like that to get the attention or "like" they so desperately want. With the rise of teens sexting and sending provocative pictures which to them increases the probability of "hooking up". We have to find that happy medium in celebrating women and allowing them to be confident no matter their age, weight, shape, height or nationality. Listen to my thoughts and I would love to hear your thoughts as well.

Leadership Lessons: How your words influence an employees actions.

Many times in our personal and professional lives we will be prompted to try to fit ourselves into someone else’s box. Everyone does it, and at some point, we all come to the realization that we are adapting the real us to fit what someone else needs.I remember the first day walking in as the Texas Director of High School Programs for DeVry University in the fall of 2007. I was excited and nervous all at the same time! Not to mention I was a new mom of a 6-month-old baby boy. I wanted to do a good job and support my team to set them up for success. I remember learning that a female leader very high up within the organization felt I was the wrong choice for the role. She did not think I was tough enough to lead a team of individuals from all walks of life and some much older than me.Here is a story of 2 different leaders and how both of them influenced my actions but only one of them set me on a path of true servant leadership for the rest of my career. As a leader, your words matter along with what you do for your team to set them up for success.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, at some point in your life someone is going to place a label on you. Whether that label is true or not, we can get trapped by what that means, and that label can place inside our head a negative image of who we are.Today's podcast is short but a lesson we all need to learn. Eliminating the labels that people put on me through school and how even today I still struggle in allowing those labels to haunt my thoughts. So with everyone working on their 2020 Goals lets start with that self-talk and take the labels others have put on us and put on that cape and fly!

Today, I have my son with me to talk about social media safety from both perspectives. Some of the things that he has already heard from some of his young friends’ girls/boys about being approached. Why I don’t allow him to have any other social media accounts except for Tick Tock. Why he follows who he follows, how he protects himself on his live video games when he is talking to others he does not know.Times have changed and these sick humans no longer need to troll the streets for their young prey. They seek safety in their homes behind a screen posing as a young teenage boy or girl. Social media has helped mask traditional cues that alert an individual to a potentially dangerous person. The best way to keep our kids safe in education and plan nosey parenting. Look we want our kids to have their privacy, but they are not old enough to since danger because of their innocence. We have to walk a fine line as parents, but at the end of the day, it is our job to protect them from the people who mean them harm.

Today's episode is my story of harassment and bullying in the workplace. I have been very hesitant about releasing this episode for months now. I want everyone to understand that it has not just been men who have hurt me in the workplace it was women too. The self-blame and doubt that happens after can ruin your confidence which will limit your lively hood in the future. Listen close to my stories and remember it is not your fault!

As we have made history in the pageant world with Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss American all African American Women. There is no doubt that we are trying to movie the right direction, but I feel corporate America is still running behind on the diversity train! We know the facts about diversity in the workplace. It is key for companies to builds a solid reputation, drive innovation that ultimately leads to profitability. Why are we not seeing more companies jump on board the diversity train? Today's podcast are with two of my Heroes who have not only inspired me professionally but personally as well. This conversation with Cynthia and Krystal is real and raw as we ask the hard questions about diversity in the workplace and why we still struggle today to understand that it is more than "required quotas".

A big part of being a Hero is defeating the enemy, but sometimes that enemy uses words not a punch in the face. Words can hurt and can impacted your future actions or how you see yourself? It’s important to speak success and direct your own life. Today's podcast is a short story about how I overcame many obstacles in my school years because of my dyslexia and how that led me to accomplish my dream of becoming a West Brook Star! This story may be personal but I hope it will inspire you to Speak Success in Your Life.

Forgiveness has been a hot topic these days especially with the direction our society is headed. We often hope we can watch "Karma" happen to the people who have wronged us and allow those thoughts to consume our days. At the end of the day we have to learn to forgive and let go! My Guest today is Tiarra Tompkins and we discuss the prison an unforgiving heart will lock us in and block the amazing blessings God has in store for us. This is a long but powerful message so listen in and learn that forgiving yourself and others can free you from the prison you have been trapped in for ages.

As I look back on my 30’s I realized that my pendulum would swing in one extreme direction without settling in the middle. I gave everything to my work and team, I gave to my family, ran myself crazy trying to keep my house spotless, only focused on the gym and nothing else, volunteer for everything in my community. Only to fill empty and lost inside. So today I am sharing a few stories from my life and give you the top 3 lessons I have learned over the years, which allowed me to Read The Chapter of ME instead of skipping over the best parts of my life...

As someone who was recently laid off from for the first time and still working through all of the emotions that come with wondering what is next and will I find another opportunity. I think what bothers me the most was the role I had was amazing! I was an Account Manager for a top fortune 100 company, worked remote from home, traveled, met my goals, worked with amazing people and just had fun working with my clients. It occurred to me today that my biggest fear was not just in finding another job but will I find one that made me feel the same way I felt with my former employer? My career path has been pretty blessed with opportunities for internal promotions or recruited away to other organizations. Now, I sit here combing through all of the job sites including LinkedIn to find that opportunity that will not only challenge me, but help me grow professionally and personally. The job hunt is not for the faint at heart and spending hours filling out online applications will drive anyone to give up and watch Netflix for the rest of the day! So for my fellow job hunters out there here are a few tips to guide you through this process.

The All or Nothing Mentality of Fitness-How to be fit and live your life too!

Just like our favorite superheroes we are faced with villains who will stop at nothing to see us fail or we are fighting our own inner demons that we allow to reck havoc over our lives. What can we do to Be The Hero of our own life and create the inner courage to wear our very own cape? I have met some pretty amazing people in my personal and professional life and I have invited them into my home to have coffee and some real conversations. How did they create the courage rescue themselves and become their very own hero which allowed them to be a hero to so many others? This weeks topic is about the all or nothing mentality of fitness. We often take on this idea that having a life and being fit don't go together. We even see this in the competitive bodybuilding world were people cut themselves off from friends and family. This kind of mentality is what leads to the yo-yo dieting which ultimately leads you right back to where you started. I have invited one of my very own heroes, best friend, hairstylist, sparkle consultant and IFBB Bikini Pro Athlete Kelsie Burgin. We talk about our own success and failures in the fitness world and the mental awareness we have developed over time that allowed us to rescue ourselves from the all or nothing mentality of fitness.

<itunes:summary>Just like our favorite superheroes we are faced with villains who will stop at nothing to see us fail or we are fighting our own inner demons that we allow to reck havoc over our lives.
