Live From The 2026 Maryland Fly Fishing Show

This marks Rob's inaugural visit to the Maryland Fly Fishing Show. For various reasons, he has faced scheduling conflicts with the event for several years. Rob doesn't frequently travel to Towson. When he was younger, his father brought him here to purchase lacrosse balls. Finding lacrosse gear and fly fishing supplies was quite challenging in the late 80s. After a brief stroll from the parking garage to the building, Rob ascends a few flights of stairs to reach the venue. In the lobby, he spots Ralph Valle and his family selling tickets. Rob gets his hand stamped and makes his way into the show. Tables are arranged along the walls, and large rectangular tables fill the central area. The lighting is low, and the scent of vintage fly tackle fills the atmosphere. Listen as Rob conducts interviews with fly tiers of various ages, guides, and vendors of custom dyed feathers and furs. There are items for sale ranging from skunk pelts and penguin feathers to dyed marabou and pheasant tails.

Schuman Feathers | Premiere Feather Suppliers

One day, Rob was browsing Instagram for pictures of lady Amherst feathers when he stumbled upon the Schuman Feathers account. The feathers were absolutely gorgeous, every single one of them, yet none were shown being utilized in fly tying. Rob reached out to ask if the dye would bleed when the feathers became wet, as he planned to use them for tying flies. He was reassured that they were indeed waterproof. Fly Name And Design As Intellectual Property

His Etsy shop features a number of original flies as well as several inspired by others, with appropriate credit given when necessary. The sender of the messages has appeared on Rob’s podcast in the past, indicating they are not unfamiliar with one another. However, the tone of the messages lacked any reference to their prior interactions, making it seem as if they were meeting for the first time. Who holds the moral high ground in this situation? Is Rob profiting from someone else's work? Is the creator of the original flies asserting their rights over the design that Rob has tied? Is the original fly’s name appropriated from someone else and thus making the complaint analogous to the pot calling the kettle black? Should fly patterns be eligible for copyright protection?

The Potomac is NOT safe to be near at this time. Dean addresses the inadequate response from the Washington DC government. 2026 | The Year Of The 5 Weight Starts At Mossy Creek

Catskills Big River Fall Brown Trout Roadtrip

Finding a place to camp in his car, he started fishing in the rain by mid-morning on Monday. He cast his line from Deposit NY down to Hancock, making a visit to the West Branch Angler along the way. Rob took a quick trip to Livingston Manor, NY, and dropped by the Dette Fly Shop. He interviewed Nick early Tuesday morning and then headed back home after their conversation. Fishing In The Shadows Of The Lodge's Ruins

Rob makes his way back to the remnants of the lodge where he was employed from 2002 to 2003. This lodge, established in 1954, was situated on a spring-fed artificial lake. The lake was stocked with fish in the 1950s, and trout were introduced in 2002. Rob managed the Orvis fly shop and served as a guide on both the lake and the tailwater.

The local community surrounding the lake was not particularly welcoming to the new lodge owners and viewed them as interlopers Just as the lodge was gearing up for its grand opening in the summer of 2003, it was tragically set ablaze by arsonists.

Caitlin’s friend has access to the lake through the Mountain Lake Club. While the ladies relaxed under a beach umbrella, Rob fished in his old favorite spots. He experimented with a range of flies that he didn’t have before the lodge met its unfortunate end. For the last thirty years, Rob has admired the writings of Nick Lyons. He considers Nick to be one of the top guests on his podcast; without the impact of Nick's work, this podcast wouldn't have come to life. Ed passed away in 2024. He wrote several books focused on the history of the Catskills and fishing. He meticulously documented his fishing experiences over thirty years, noting what he caught, the timing, weather conditions, fly patterns, and more, which serve as the foundation for this book. Ed discusses his straightforward approach to fly fishing, how to effectively present well-tied flies to a trout that’s rising, the history of classic trout flies, and much more. Part 2 | Floating The West Branch of the Delaware River

The second part of Rob and Producer Jason's journey along the West Branch of the Delaware River. They drift for two days, traveling from Deposit to Balls Eddy, fish the evening hatch, then sleep in the back of their cars. Rob narrates his observations of the cold river and its environment as he takes in the sights around him. Trout are feeding, rise forms dimple the surface, and the duo cast imitations of caddis and mayflies to the rising fish throughout their trip. The first day features windy weather and bad shore lunch. The second day sees calm wind currents, a reduction in anglers on the river, another dodgy lunch, and a beautiful sunset. The third day turns out to be a washout as a massive thunderstorm stalls over the mountains. Rob says goodbye to Jason and makes his way to New Jersey to meet up with his girlfriend and her cousins. He hadn’t anticipated spending the afternoon by the trout streams of the Garden State.

Rob first learned about the Wild Trout Trust when he interviewed British musician Craig Joiner. Craig's website states £1 from all sales of his latest album ‘ A Kind of Calm’ will be donated to the 'Wild Trout Trust'.

Rob contacted Wild Trout and found Shaun Leonard. Shaun has a degree in marine biology and pollution. He was Head of Fishery Studies at Sparsholt College until 2009 when he became the director at the Wild Trout Trust.

Rob and Shaun discuss all things being fish nerds, growing up watching the Cousteau documenters, and seeking peace on the water. Shaun shares stories about non-native signal crayfish, natural history of British Isles fishes and the physical geography that currently makes this land islands.

The mission of the Wild Trout Trust states they are a river conservation charity focused on improving habitat for wild brown trout. As excellent indicators of river health, improving the habitat of these iconic fish benefits an enormous range of other freshwater wildlife.

They specialize in restoring rivers and empowering others to do the same. They deliver habitat improvement projects across the United Kingdom and Ireland, and provide expert advice to their partners, landowners, and communities.

Part 1 | Floating The West Branch of the Delaware River

Rob has been captivated by the West Branch of the Delaware River since last August when he fished there for the first time. He has been eager to return and this time, he plans to bring his raft and Producer Jason along. The first part of this adventure starts with Rob organizing the trip from home, communicating with Jason over the phone, and preparing his girlfriend for the journey. She’ll only be going partway and won’t be fishing. Rob and Caitlin make the drive from Northern Virginia to Bethlehem, PA, and then Rob follows Jason to Hancock, NY. They require two vehicles to navigate the river. Tune in as Rob outlines the trip, including packing his FlyCraft for it’s inaugural river float, along with the details shared between Rob and Jason. At this point they have no idea where they will eat, sleep, or put the boat in and take it out.

Fly Fishing The Fall Line | Fredericksburg, Virginia

Rob drove down to Fredericksburg, Virginia for some late-season shad fishing. After the shad depart, the striped bass, spotted gar, and northern snakehead make their appearance. After parking at Falmouth Beach, Rob strides across the sand to the primary river channel, where he galavants above and below the Route 1 bridge. This bridge signifies the tidal fall line on the Rappahannock River. Two weeks later, Rob asks Misty to join him for more escapades. Will the stunning weather help? Should Rob fish a single fly or tandem rig? These are the waters Rob fished during his college years in Fredericksburg in the late 1990s. Misty remarks that there are no elephants or tigers for Rob to be concerned about.

Remembering John Gierach And His Influence

Rob's introduction to fly fishing literature started with a copy of Sex, Death, And Fly Fishing while on vacation in The Galápagos Islands during the summer of 1993. The writings of John Gierach inspired Rob to pursue a lifetime of trout fishing, fly tying, travelling to Colorado, writing, and telling stories. Rob wanted to be a trout bum before he could drive a car. Rob talks about his fondness for Gierach’s work and his inspiration which led Rob to talk into a microphone instead of tap stories onto a keyboard. John’s life of trout fishing ended in October 2024. His voice will be missed by the entire fishing community. Thankfully his words will last forever on paper. Be sure to read his collected works, short stories, periodical contributions from the past four decades. I will always think of him when I hear the bagpipes.

Fly Fishing The West Branch Delaware River

Rob and Caitlin drove the Xterra north to New York for a wedding over the Labor Day weekend. This was a destination wedding that happened to be on one of the most famous trout streams in the world. Rob has read about this fishery since childhood. This is his first time visiting the Hancock area and fishing the Upper Delaware River. This section of the river is a tailwater and begins a few miles above the resort in the town of Deposit. The water flows cool, clear, and constant throughout the year. Emerald green and slow, the water speed is controlled by the dam release upstream.

The West Branch Angler and Resort were excellent hosts. The food, hospitality, and fire pit are unmatched. Rob plans on casting dries to rising fish, stripping streamers for big bad browns, and wiggle mice patterns across the riffles at dusk. Listen as Rob explores the river and its surroundings. He sneaks out of the wedding reception to fish. Be sure to contact Josh for casting lessons.

Steve Duda is a Midwesterner turned west coaster. He describes writing as the only thing he can do. Currently, Steve is Head of Fish Tales at Patagonia. His new book titled River Songs is his first ‘solo album’ that consists of short stories from his travels and observations. The book is full of history, science, nature, and anecdotes.

In this episode we learn about Steve’s youth as a sports fan, angler, and writer. The conversation was indented to focus on his book, however, these guys went off course quickly. Steve discusses his disdain for the semi-colon and farmed raised salmon. He tells stories about pranking his fising buddies, the ability to smell a school of fish moving in, and wild vs hatchery steelhead in the Pacific and Great Lakes. Sea Lamprey: A Great Lakes Invader With Greg McClinchey

Rob was inspired to dedicate an entire podcast episode about lamprey after reading Cory Brant‘s Great Lakes Sea Lamprey: The 70 Year War on a Biological Invader. These bizarre fish would not have a full podcast episode dedicated to them, however their presence in the Great Lakes effects anglers across all the lakes. Rob sent out a few emails and was directed to Greg McClinchey at the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission (GLFC).

Greg is the GLFC Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs. Rob and Greg talk all things sea lamprey from the fossil record to current day. Sea lamprey are freakishly odd creatures that have remained mostly unchanged for the past several millions years. Learn what happens when they entered a new ecosystem and how their voracious appetite relates to you as an angler.

This is his list of boat ramp and drift boat fly fishing things to think about before your next trip.

Rob covers a few do's and don'ts for boat ramps to make you and your guide a little less stressed. The first part of the podcast covers putting the boat in and loading gear. Now that you are in thew water Rob then discusses rowing etiquette. How not to piss off other boaters and anglers. He further talks about what to pack ahead of time, casting from a drift boat, and landing fish. He finishes with miscellaneous information and a few stories mixed in.

Remember to help where help is needed, use the bathroom before you arrive at the ramp, don't stand in the middle of the river when a dozen drift boats are about to come through, and always have dry toilet paper.
