Initially drafted as rookie by Essendon in 1999, the key forward has to wait until 2010 at 28 years of age to make his AFL debut for Geelong. In between he was rejected by numerous AFL clubs and dominated for Werribee in the VFL. Podsiadly's fairytale was complete when he was part of Geelong's 2011 premiership side. The J-Pod, as he was known moved to Adelaide in 2014 before retiring at the end of 2015.

In over 11 seasons with South Fremantle he played 243 games, and achieved virtually everything the game at the time had to offer. Stephen is a two time Sandover Medallist, Tassie Medal winner and recipient of five club fairest and best awards. He was named captain of the 1983 All Australian team, and a prominent member of South Fremantle’s 1980 premiership team. In 1995 he was named as an inaugural member of the Fremantle Football Hall of Legends, he is an Australian Football Hall of Famer, he was named at Centre Half Forward in the Australian Football Indigenous Team of the Century, and in 2009 he was named in the ruck and captain of the South Fremantle Football Club's Indigenous Team of the Century.
