Solar on farms: the numbers that actually matter

Solar has moved well past being a “nice idea” on farm. With power prices still biting, farmers are asking harder questions — what size system, what does it cost, and how long before it pays for itself?

I spoke with Pete Summerfield from Auric Solar about what’s really being installed right now:
• Dairy sheds running 50–150kW systems with payback around 5 years
• Irrigation pumps at 100–300kW, typically 6–6.5 year payback
• Other ag sites scaling anywhere from 50–500kW, depending on load and tariff

The big takeaway? Solar is site-specific. Tariffs, load profiles, and timing matter — and oversizing or chasing export rates is where people come unstuck.

If you’re serious about solar, run the numbers properly before spending six figures.

“Winter grazing compliance has once again flared up as a hot issue in Southland. Federated Farmers say some farmers are being blindsided with invoices as high as four thousand dollars for short on-farm inspections — calling it a cash grab that’s adding unnecessary stress in already tough times. Environment Southland, however, says those claims are inaccurate and that farmers aren’t being charged unless there’s a proven breach.
