June 1 marks the first day of the 2025 hurricane season and, right on cue, Tropical Storm Alvin is swirling in the Pacific Ocean and poised to drench Baja California this weekend.

While the Atlantic Ocean is quiet at the moment, don't expect the silence to last for long.

Michael Brennan, the director of the National Hurricane Center, joins Lee Goldberg on his "Weather or Not" podcast to discuss the seasonal forecast, which is looking more active than average. The season ends on Nov. 30.

While El Nino won't appear this year, the Atlantic hurricane season is set to be busier than normal thanks to warmer-than-average ocean temperatures in the basin, along with a slew of other factors, Brennan told Goldberg.

Luckily for us, Brennan says forecasting tools have steadily been improving, allowing meteorologists to anticipate tumultuous weather -- like a rapidy intensifying hurricane -- much sooner than ever.

After an 80-degree day in March offered a taste of summer, April has been struggling to achieve sustained mild weather -- parts of the area even saw snow this past weekend -- but we may see some more warming toward the end of the month.

The long and short of it, however, may be bad news for lovers of mild weather: Despite periodic warmups, don't expect warm weather to stick around sustained stretches, even into May, says Pastelok. In fact, if you are living in the interior Northeast, you may want to wait to put out your flowers.

Get ready for a brief blast of extreme heat on Wednesday, and strong thunderstorms – especially at night.

It will feel like 100 degrees on Wednesday, but the high heat, fortunately, only lasts for one day.

The other threat will be for bookend thunderstorms. The first round could begin around sunrise, but the severe risk will likely take place late Wednesday night, especially in central and southern parts of New Jersey.

Then a big cooldown comes, as temperatures plummet to the low and middle 70s. Tie in clouds with wind gusts, and Thursday will feel more like fall.

Wake-Up Weather: Debby's remnants bring downpours, damaging winds & tornado risk

The remnants of Debby are rapidly churning towards our area, posing a multi-threat of downpours, damaging winds and a tornado risk on Friday.

Lee Goldberg says the peak intensity will be during the afternoon and evening hours, and while the rain totals won't match what we saw during the middle part of the week, we could still see 1-3 inches throughout the Tri-State.

Given our already saturated ground, it won't take much rain to cause flash flooding, and winds gusts of up to 50 mph, especially at the coast, could cause trees to topple.

Lee says we can't rule out a potential isolated tornado given the intensity of the winds.

Wake-Up Weather: Cool and damp again on Thursday

Thursday will be a rinse and repeat of Wednesday's cool and damp conditions with a few more downpours as a tropical air mass returns to the area.

That tropical air will come in the form of Debby's remnants which will accelerate to the north after making a second landfall on the South Carolina coast.

Lee Goldberg says the remnants will likely impact our area between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, which could potentially carry downpours, damaging winds and coastal flooding. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out as well.

Once we get through a stormy Saturday morning, we'll rapidly recover this weekend, as the sun returns along with warm and less humid conditions.

After we get past some residual heavy rain from severe storms overnight, Wednesday will be significantly cooler – about 20 degrees in fact!

Sharper eye in the sky: The new GOES-U weather satellite is a forecast game-changer

The GOES-U weather satellite was set to launch on June 25, and it's going to make a big difference in how we cover weather and keep people safe from extreme weather events.

The images it will capture will be four times sharper than the previous generation of GOES satellite, and the data and detail we will get from the new GOES-U will help improve our forecasts and keep people safer in a time of increasingly extreme weather. It will also play a key role in monitoring solar storms and space-weather hazards.

GOES is short for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, and will orbit the Earth 22,236 miles over the equator. It will be the fourth and final satellite in the GOES series. It will be renamed GOES-19 once it enters orbit.

Lee Goldberg is joined by NOAA's Tom Renkevens, the chief of Satellite Products and Services Division, who breaks it all down for us.

Are smoky skies in our future? Weather or Not with Lee Goldberg

In this episode of Weather or Not, meteorologist Lee Goldberg forecasts the wet weather that's on the way, and dives deeper into the potential impact of Canadian wildfires on our area.

Smoke from those wildfires has prompted health warnings across the Upper Midwest and Montana for the second year in a row.

The question is, will it get that bad for our area? If you recall, wildfire smoke draped the Tri-State in a thick orange hue last year – leading to a spike in the Air Quality Index.

While Lee says the smoke is not aimed at our area yet, he says there is potential for some exposure – to what degree is unclear right now.

As for the immediate forecast, we'll see more wet weather through the end of the week, but no drenchers. The same can be said for the long-range forecast, which predicts near normal temperatures with periodic rainfall but no soakers.

Lee recaps eclipse adventure and provides long-range weather preview

UPDATE: Punishing late-season storm to deliver heavy rain, wind and even snow across Northeast

The calendar has flipped to April, but some areas across the Tri-State, mainly upstate New York, are bracing for snow this week.

Even those missing the snow will see wintery chill, heavy rain, the risk of flooding and stiff winds, which will bring weather-related disruptions.

The nor'easter will be a slow mover as it delivers significant snow to New England, extending the ski season, and showers will linger in the forecast across the region for days.

The Yankees home-opener, though raw and cold, is looking like a go. And how about Monday's total solar eclipse? Clouds will likely cover large swaths of the path of totality, but upstate New York could be a sweet spot for viewing. And the New York City area, though 10 percent shy of totality, will enjoy a great shot of taking in the celestial spectacle, with darkening skies, dropping temperatures and wild animals reacting to the sudden dimming.

In this edition of Weather or Not, Lee Goldberg takes a look at a progressively rainy week that could impact the New York Mets home opener, and dives into the weather pattern as we approach the total solar eclipse.

What has started out as a mainly dry week will become dreary and rainy as a storm approaches our area.

This storm is all about rainfall, with a wave of low pressure that could slow the front and enhance precipitation. That's likely bad news for the Mets home opener on Thursday, and a postponement is not out of the question.

Looking ahead at the overall weather pattern as we hand the baton off from March to April, Lee says we'll begin to dry out and warmth will start to build, but don't expect any huge warmups over the next seven to 10 days.

However, the question on everyone's mind is: what will the weather be like for the total solar eclipse on April 8?

Lee says there are some concerns about clouds spilling into the path of totality ahead of our next system – the question is whether or not those clouds can hold off long enough to get a clear glimpse of the rare celestial event.

Sweet road trip! Lee Goldberg takes us maple sugaring at a New York state farm

Lee Goldberg takes "Weather or Not" on the road to Muscoot Farm in the Westchester County community of Katonah.

You may think of places much farther north, like Vermont, as hubs of maple sugaring, but local farms like Muscoot tap delicious syrup from their own maple trees.

It's a seasonal tradition that's beloved, but like so many things that depend on climate, global warming is shaping its future.

You need subfreezing temperatures at night and above freezing temperatures during the day to get the best syrup flow, and with abnormally warm stretches of weather in recent years during sugaring season, that right weather has become elusive.

Muscoot Farm director Jonathon Benjamin gives Lee a tour of the tapped trees and the warm and wonderful-smelling sugar house, and explains how the length of sugaring season has lessened over time because of warmer winters, and what the long-term impacts can be of those changes.

Three storms, five days: Preparing for several rounds of rain

We're in for another stormy week, as Lee Goldberg times out not one, not two, but three rounds of rainmakers over the next five days.

The first one will come overnight on Tuesday, with the steadiest rain happening during the morning commute.

The next soaker comes Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, with the heaviest period likely coming Wednesday evening.

We'll get a little breather on Friday when we'll dry out, but that will be followed by another soaker on Saturday that could inundate our area with more rain, creating the potential for flash flooding.

Over the next few days, Lee Goldberg will stay on top of the storms with periodic updates as the week evolves.

STORM UPDATE: Gusty squall then winter whiplash

We're in for a stormy night come Wednesday evening!

A gusty squall line bringing tornado threats to the Midwest will be less dynamic by the time it gets to our area, but we could still see gusty winds and embedded heavy downpours for several hours Wednesday night.

Once the storm moves out, it will usher in a winter whiplash of cold air that could see temperatures plummet 25-30 degrees by Thursday morning.

Spring preview ends stormy ahead of bitter cold blast

In this episode of 'Weather or Not,' Lee Goldberg takes us through a spring preview that will end stormy – maybe even with a squall line coming through the area Wednesday evening.

Rounds of gusty downpours will be followed by a winter whiplash, carrying a blast of cold air that will last for one day, but it will result in a sharp temperature drop Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The Tri-State area could see the heaviest downpours between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, making for a rough evening commute with low visibility and wind gusts that could exceed 40 mph.

Once the rain moves out, our area could see a 25- to 30-degree drop in temperatures by Thursday morning, with wind chills in the teens and 20s.

Fortunately, the cold blast will be brief – leading to a March that comes in like a lamb.

Winds of change: How AI could revolutionize weather forecasting

Artificial intelligence is taking weather forecasting to the next level. A fast-moving winter storm set to hit the Tri-State area could be disruptive overnight and into Saturday morning.

Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg times out the latest threat which could bring some slushy accumulations to much of the area, leading to slippery roadways and low visibility.

Will winter -- and snow -- make a comeback?

Will winter make a comeback?

Yes, it's been mild much of this winter, and we've only had enough snow to barely break our persistent snow drought.

But at long last, factors are coming together (jet stream activity, polar vortex, more snow cover to the north) in a way that could unleash a good long stretch of winter. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Paul Pastelok thinks that after the pattern change establishes itself, around Valentine's Day, we could see two to four weeks of real winter weather.

And if you've given up on snow, your despair may be premature. While next week's potential system may not cut it -- everything would have to be perfect, as Paul says, for snow -- locking in cold air for the second half of February and into early March will offer opportunities if a favorable storm track develops.

Lee Goldberg shares his thoughts, and explains why he hasn't given up on getting over 10 inches of snow this winter before it's all said and done.

The 2024 total solar eclipse: Everything you need to know

Mark your calendars – and start booking those travel plans!

There’s a brilliant celestial event that will be coming up in just a short time: a total eclipse of the sun that will be visible on a “path of totality” from the Southwest to the Northeast.

Totality will be coming very close to the Tri-State area, and we're going to tell you the best way to see it, advise you on how to stay safe while watching it, and detail the best places to go in the United States. And even if you stay in the Tri-State area, you are in for something special.

We are honored to have the great Joe Rao join us on “Weather or Not.” He is one of the deans of Tri-State meteorology, a co-host of the “Joe and Joe Weather Show” with Joe Cioffi and an instructor at the Hayden Planetarium.

Indeed, you may know Rao as a veteran and highly regarded broadcast meteorologist, but he’s also deeply passionate and knowledgeable about astronomy, and has traveled far and wide since the 1970s to witness total solar eclipses.

“You have to see if you've never seen one before – you have to see a total solar eclipse, it is stunning. A total solar eclipse is probably the most amazing spectacle that you will ever see in your lifetime,” Rao said.

“Consider, Lee, the fact that astronomers travel in some cases halfway around the world to see one of these things,” Rao said. “And yet, on that second Monday in April, April the eighth, for many people here in the Tri-State area, it is just only a few hours drive to the north, up across western and northern New York State to see this incredible sight and that that's not going to happen too often in one's lifetime, unless you're practically in the totality zone”

Thirty-two million people live in the solar eclipse’s path of totality, and they’ll be joined by countless others who will be traveling to see this extraordinary celestial spectacle.

This eclipse will be different from the one we remember in 2017. For one thing, it will cover a bigger, 125-mile-wide path of totality. It will also be longer lasting, with totality continuing for over 4 minutes.

Rao predicts traffic generated by the eclipse may rival annual mass getaways like Thanksgiving week travel.

“I think that this year, the most heavily traveled day for people by car, by train, by plane, by bus is probably going to be the days leading up to the total eclipse of the sun. Because I'm sure a lot of people, many people, millions of people are going to try to get inside of the zone of totality to see it,” Rao said.

Snow, heavy for some, followed by sharp Arctic snap then big January thaw

Here we snow again! A second winter storm will bring a fresh blanket of snow across New York City and the Tri-State with heavier amounts piling up in parts of New Jersey.

The wind is not forecasted to be unusually strong, but it may be enough to blow snow around and reduce visibility.

The roads and sidewalks are likely to get slippery and slick, especially as snow falls more consistently into Friday afternoon.

Lee details who gets how much, and how a so-called Norlun Trough could deliver heavier snow for some.

Some of the coldest air of the winter so far will arrive this weekend in the wake of the storm.

Winter wakes up: Heavy rain to Arctic blast to snow – or no

Here we go again! A powerful low pressure system will bring more heavy rainfall and gusty winds Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Rainfall totals and winds won't be as high as Tuesday, but impact will still be significant given our weakened state.

Then, the Arctic blast will move across the country, dropping our temperatures and creating blustery conditions.

The deep penetrating cold blast will likely help to set up a storm track that favors snow early.

A coastal low is expected to develop along the southeastern coast late Monday and track northeast.

With cold air remaining in place, snow looks possible across much of the region but a lot is still uncertain about the track.

Lee says it will be “snow or no,” and with the pieces of the puzzle not even together yet, it’s much too early to come up with estimates. But Lee teases it out and shares his latest thinking.

Dangerous winter storm to unleash floods, high winds, heavy rain

Our active weather pattern shows no signs of letting up, with a powerful winter storm that will impact much of the country poised to wreak havoc on the Tri-State area later Tuesday into Wednesday, and more systems ahead in coming days.

This latest storm, a type known as a Cutter, will wallop the Midwest with heavy snow. In New York area, we are facing an all-rain event, one that promises to dump between 2 to 4 inches of rain, unleash ferocious winds of up to 60 mph or even greater and set off potentially devastating flooding. The heavy rain and warmer temperatures – rising into the 50s and pushing 60 – will set off what Lee Goldberg describes as a flash melt.

Of particular concern are communities along the Passaic River in New Jersey, which are still recovering from significant flooding last month. Lee Goldberg talks to Little Falls Mayor James Belford Damiano, who explains the threat his community is facing and what the Department of Public Works is doing to protect residents.

Once this storm clears, another potent weekend storm looms. That one, too, is looking like a winter super soaker. But yet another system next week could be arrive with colder air in place, raising the prospect of snow falling on the I-95 corridor for the first time this season.

Winter storm barrels toward Northeast: Who gets snow?

The storm that will hit the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast has inspired considerable "snow-ticipation," but for at least New York City, it looks like a case of too fast, too weak, and too warm, Lee Goldberg says in his latest "Weather or Not" podcast.

He still can't write off a few inches in New York City but the storm would have to intensify faster, and the formation of heavy bands of precipitation would have to overcome warm temperatures near the surface. It's not impossible, but unlikely at this juncture.

North and west is a different -- and decidedly snowier -- story.

Lee takes us through what he thinks will happen, and looks at two additional storms that may hit into mid-January, and whether we have any snow chances with those.
