Participants will have a chance to visit both museums, explore their stories, and engage in crafts, activities, tours, and workshops to look beyond the exhibits and connect with history firsthand. A popular World Heritage tourist site in China is in the news, after installing TIMERS above the door of each bathroom stall.  (They're at the Yungang Grottoes, featuring intricate cave art from 1,500 years ago.)

The timer starts when you walk in, so everyone waiting in line can see how long you've been in there. But officials claim they're NOT trying to rush anyone.

They say the timers are a new safety feature they added in case someone has a medical emergency and can't call for help.

The idea is if you've been in there 30 minutes, it's safe to assume you're not still using the bathroom.  (I don't know . . . I've had issues with Chinese food.)

They say they'd never kick someone out for taking too long, and there's no plan to institute a, quote, "time limit such as five or 10 minutes." But some people still think it's weird, and that you'd naturally feel rushed.

Connor Hamlyn, born and raised in Kingston and in his third year of health sciences at Queen’s, has spent the past six months charting out his route along the Bruce Trail from Niagara to Tobermory, with the hopes of raising $1,000 for Lionhearts Inc.

“I’ve been looking to do something challenging, some big hike, for the past couple of years, and I was looking over all the options we had around Ontario and across Canada,” he explained.

Having been to Tobermory once, the Bruce Trail immediately caught his attention...

Running through Nov. 15 at 4 p.m., community members are invited to propose their most distinctive and Kingston-relevant names on the Get Involved Kingston platform. The City, after sifting through submissions, will curate a shortlist of potential names. Subsequently, from Nov. 22 to Nov. 29, the broader community will have the chance to cast their vote for their preferred snowplow designation on the same platform. The selected name is set to be unveiled on Dec. 11.

What is Marathon of Sport?

We’re bringing athletes of all abilities together on the playing field. Teams of up to 10 will be joined by 1-2 local Special Olympics athletes and together they will participate in a variety of sports and activities all while raising funds and awareness in support of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

While fundraising is one of our goals, Marathon of Sport is about so much more. This day not only brings awareness to the Special Olympics movement, but allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to interact, build lifelong friendships, and ultimately create more inclusive communities.

We want to share the news of this year’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations on Wednesday, June 21st. The day kicks off at 9am with a free breakfast from Kewaywin Circle in City Park and events running from 10am - 6pm. 

We will be presenting activities for all ages; artist vendors and a Youth Art installation, open mic performances, inflatable playgrounds and climbing wall, games and prizes, community drumming and singing near the Sacred Fire, and food trucks with meal vouchers for Indigenous families. 

In the evening Juno-award winning band Digging Roots will be performing live at Richardson Stadium in a free, all-ages concert intended for Indigenous families and their guests but community members are also welcome. Researcher Clément Vinauger says, “It confirms what past studies have found, that mosquitoes don’t like coconut-scented products, so our safest bet right now is to use those. Hatton. “Last year, I saw firsthand the amazing generosity of this community and I know that we are much stronger together. I am excited to work with my fellow volunteers and community members to make the 2023 campaign a great success for the benefit of the greater Kingston community, including Frontenac, Lennox and Addington counties.”

Col. Hatton has previously volunteered with the United Way KFL&A, volunteering on the Campaign Cabinet since he arrived in Kingston last year. As the chair for the 2023 campaign, he will be working with volunteers and the community to build on the success of the 2022 campaign.

“This community is fortunate to have such strong volunteer leadership every year,” says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO, United Way KFL&A. “Colonel Hatton brings such wonderful energy and enthusiasm. He is building on a strong foundation and, together with an amazing Campaign Cabinet, all our awesome volunteers, and a caring and generous community, this campaign will be another great success.”

The annual campaign raises funds that are then invested locally in programs that support people in vulnerable situations. As the effects of the pandemic persist and costs rise, United Way KFL&A continues to work collaboratively with agencies and community partners to address the most pressing needs – homelessness, food security, addictions, and mental health.

“Due to inflation, housing cost increases, a general lack of availability of affordable housing, and the ongoing drug crisis, local agencies are noting a rise in both needs and the complexity of needs in the community,” Col. Hatton added. “Individuals in KFL&A are relying on the support made possible through the generosity of donors.”

The 82nd annual United Way KFL&A Campaign will kick off on Friday, September 8th, 2023. Stay tuned for more details.

Commander, Canadian Forces Base Kingston

Colonel Sonny Hatton enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1994 and was commissioned as an Artillery officer upon graduation from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in 1998. Following graduation, he has served in Shilo, Edmonton, Petawawa (twice), Ottawa (twice), Kansas, Latvia, Israel and Kingston (three times).

Col Hatton has served on operations domestically and abroad, helping fight forest fires in BC and providing security for the G8 Summit in Kananaskis, AB and the G20 Toronto Summit. Internationally, he has deployments in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Latvia.

Col Hatton has commanded at all levels, from the tactical, operational and institutional, including commanding 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery Regiment in Petawawa, acting as Deputy Commander of the Latvian Mechanized Infantry Brigade (yes Latvian!), and he is now the Commander of CFB Kingston. He has also served in a number of staff roles and has attended staff colleges in the US and Israel.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Software Engineering and a master’s degree in Defence Engineering and Management from RMC. He also holds a master’s degree in Military Arts and Science from the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies and a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Haifa.

Having spent three postings and one-third of his 28-year career in Kingston, Colonel Hatton considers the city his second home. He is happily married to Chantal Hatton going on 20 years and they have one child who attends Kingston Secondary School.

On Saturday, Apr. 8, 2023, families are invited to visit Confederation Basin between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. According to a release from organizers, attendees can enjoy free coffee, hot chocolate, s’mores, a vendor fair, and a variety of kids activities including an Easter Egg Hunt, story time with local author Peggy Collins, colouring, and a number of special guests, including several K4Paws puppies in training. Professional spring photos by Linda Krakow Eaman will be offered by donation, and advanced registration is recommended as spots are limited. The event will be held rain or shine, so dress for the weather.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this as a free family event, thanks to the generosity of the Visitor Information Centre hosting us,” said Elizabeth Bailey, President of Kingston 4 Paws. “Community is so important for all of us. Researcher Lilach Hadani concluded; “We found that many plants—corn, wheat, grape, and cactus plants, for example—emit sounds when they are stressed. Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these organisms use sound for communication, so it would be very suboptimal for plants to not use sound at all.''

July 5th 2022 was the day our lives changed forever, for the worst. Briar (our fiesty two year old) had woken up from her nap and went outside to play, while I was inside with some other family. I had this odd feeling in my stomach, so I went outside to check on Briar, where I found her unresponsive, face down in the pool. I preformed CPR on her, cleared her airway before paramedics arrived. The rest of the day was a bit of a blur. Once our B was stable enough to travel, her and I were on a life flight to the IWK, where we spent a month. This is when we learned that Briar has permanent damage to her basal ganglia, as a result of an anoxic and hypoxic brain injury, with dystonia being a secondary condition. she was transfered to CHEO in Ottawa to continue healing until she was well enough to be discharged home at the end of September.

These injuries have left Briar requiring a wheelchair, bath chair, and other mobility aids to get around, and as she is grown we are learning that we can no longer safely lift her in and out of the van, and into her car seat. We are asking if you can, to come out to Smoke 'N' Barrel on the 11th of March, to help us raise funds to assist in getting our van retrofitted for wheelchair accessibility. A six-foot-tall robot helper at a grocery store in Pennsylvania ESCAPED this week, and tried to make a run for it. His name is "Marty", and he normally looks for spills and counts inventory. But someone posted a video of him rolling through the parking lot. An employee eventually got him back inside.

According to organizers, the most needed items are baby items like baby food, baby diapers, baby wipes, foods such as dried and canned foods, dried fruits, pasta, rice, granola bars, cereal, pancake mix and personal hygiene products, as well as items for holiday meals. Gift cards are also a recommended item, and allow the organizations to purchase more of the items they need this season.

A strange new study claims that simply "eating potatoes" could help you lose weight.  

Potatoes DO have some vitamins and nutrients . . . but that isn't really the point. The idea is that potatoes are low in calories and FILLING . . . so eating potatoes could mean that you don't eat as much.

During the study, they replaced portions of people's meals with potatoes . . . mashed potatoes, potato wedges, potato salad, and scalloped potatoes.

One researcher said, "People tend to eat the same weight of food regardless of calorie content in order to feel full. By eating foods with a heavier weight that are low in calories, you can easily reduce the number of calories you consume."

Come out and celebrate the spooky season of Halloween with the Marine Museum and your community. This family-friendly Halloween event invites you to dress up in costume and have a festive afternoon. This event includes activities like pumpkin carving, a scavenger hunt to find Black Beard’s Bones, Halloween crafts, and a Ghost Pirate Ship!

Halloween on the High Seas also welcomes the contributions of partners Neptune and Salacia Diving for underwater pumpkin carving and Tall Ships Expeditions Canada - Brigantine Inc. for the spookiest ship on the seven seas - the Ghost Ship St. Lawrence II! Take a photo at the wheel with a swarthy swashbuckling pirate as you join a crew of bilge rats and ne'er-do-wells on a Halloween Tall Ship adventure!

Those in costume will have their name entered into a draw to win prizes, so show up in your best costume (marine costumes are encouraged!). Event goers will also have a chance to trick-or-treat and collect some treats as activities are completed and crafts are made. Looking forward to all the mermaids, pirates, and scuba divers coming by to enjoy this event!
