Before Joseph can back out of his marriage to Mary, an angel finds a backchannel in the dream space and explains why he will be the stepfather of the millennia. Accordingly, before Joseph gets out of bed, he agrees to step up and help Mary bring the prophecy to full term. In this episode, listeners hear Joseph as a silent partner, who answers the call to bear witness.

The “kin-dom” of God is near and he wants to know what they are doing here. John informs them that he is getting folks washed up, but Jesus is coming to clean house. In this episode, listeners hear John the Baptizer’s hissy fit aimed at the snake pit, a “brood of vipers” and learn the difference between water and fire baptism.

It’s season six of "The Raceless Gospel" podcast, and the question is: "Stay Woke?" It’s an inquiry for the sleepy-headed who are tired of the narrative of white-body supremacy and refuse to give it any more energy.

After the November presidential election, 92% of African American women took off their capes and invested in sheets with higher thread counts. They climbed into bed, closed their eyes, and started counting sheep. While African Americans hit the snooze button, European Americans are slowly waking up to the reality that racism is bad for everybody. After Republican politicians colonized the expression "stay woke," the community’s call to remain aware of social injustice and discrimination, African Americans collectively decided—without a meeting—that rest is resistance. Still, "every shut eye ain’t sleep."

It’s the final episode in the Lenten series. Cursed and left to die, Jesus is left out on a limb, left high and dry. Three years of Jesus’ life, how quickly his disciples forget his messages, his miracles, his Messiahship. Not one volunteers to be a character witness, to testify to his goodness. With the religious elite, the government and crowd participation, they are all complicit. Jesus reveals the intimate, communal, and systemic betrayal of those around him and what they are faithful to. Body nailed down and framed on a cross, refusing to give in to the temptation to deceive and be deceived, Jesus beat the system.

Satan gives Jesus a look behind door number three. “All the earth’s kingdoms could be yours. Just bow down and worship me.” In episode three of this Lenten series, the devil wants Jesus on his knees. Jesus reminds the devil that there is a supreme reality and a “kin-dom” that is not of this world. The “kin-dom” of God is not within the city limits. Satan repeatedly attempts to tests the limits of Jesus’ power and if we’re not careful, he’ll test ours.

Jesus, the hometown hero (or at least that’s what they say now), Mary’s boy, Joseph’s stepson. We have fancier names for him now, but I want to introduce us to the Jesus who came to a prepubescent teen girl as she is not featured in the nativity scene we have some version of. All her hairs and every animal in place, the serene scene is far from the truth. Birthing a child at any time of the day is never silent.

So please do not offer me your rendition of “Silent Night.” But I digress. Back to Jesus, sweet baby Jesus, divinity in pounds and ounces, can you see him? How do you ready yourself to receive him in an unkempt world? The season of Advent is one of preparation, a reminder of God the Family and that we are a part of it.

Jesus’ birth foretold by prophets. His arrival announced by angels. His presence felt by his cousin John before he comes out kicking and screaming, a bouncing baby boy. Jesus is coming and he comes bearing good news and carries the government on his shoulders. Jesus is coming and coming to undue every unjust system that robs me of you.

A season of preparation for a ‘kin-dom’ that is coming. Back up. Give everyone some space. There is “plenty good room.” Come one, come all to Jesus.

Segregated on Sunday mornings, the Raceless Gospel Podcast is the church service I have always wanted. Modeled after a worship service and complete with the call and response of guests, it captures the liturgy of life, the hymn singing of the hum drum, the unbelievable and everything in between with testimonies of the new creation, the new kin- dom on the way. It is a conversation about words that we need to flesh out.
