<title>Season 2 - Silent Signals: How Nonverbal Communication Shapes Performance in Baseball, Tennis, and Football</title>
<description>Welcome to Season 2 of the Student Voices of the Hill Country: A Schreiner Student Pod Series. In this series, we continue to explore the lives, views, and observations of Schreiner Students. In this episode 2, we look at how nonverbal communication shapes performance in sports.

This podcast episode examines how nonverbal communication influences strategy, psychology, and outcomes in baseball, tennis, and football. In baseball, coaches and catchers use structured, memorized hand-signal systems—often including decoys—to direct bunts, steals, pitch type, and location, while opponents attempt to decode signs and batters read pitchers’ subtle “tells.” In tennis, nonverbal cues center on self-regulation and psychological influence, including routines, posture, tempo control, reading micro-expressions and body mechanics, and doubles partners coordinating with behind-the-back signals. In football, sideline signaling, audibles, and body language enable rapid coordination amid noise, as seen in a quarterback who relies on hand signals due to limited hearing. The episode concludes that nonverbal communication is faster, harder to detect, builds trust through practice, and highlights awareness, timing, and connection beyond sports.

Key highlights:

  Baseball Sign Systems

  Tennis Inner Communication

  Football Sideline Signs

  Comparing the Three Sports

  Why Nonverbal Works

<title>Season 2 - Schreiner Athletics - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly</title>
<description>Welcome to Season 2 of the Student Voices of the Hill Country: A Schreiner Student Pod Series. In this series, we continue to explore the lives, views, and observations of Schreiner Students. In this episode 2, we look at the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Schreiner Athletics.

The hosts for this episode are Jessica, who plays soccer, and Molly, who shoots on the rifle team and plays baseball. The discussion will focus on why they chose Schreiner University, and how academics are prioritized as “student over athlete.” They compare first-year experiences, including required study hours for some teams, and describe coaching as a key driver of the athlete experience: soccer features consistent, supportive coaching and weekly meetings; rifle relies heavily on peer coaching amid frequent coach turnover; and baseball has a strong head coach but limited assistant coach engagement. They highlight teammate dynamics, contrast soccer’s inclusive culture with baseball’s cliques on large rosters, and note program pros/cons such as small-campus access to professors, travel demands, fundraising, workload, and coaching stability. The episode concludes with outcomes: one stays at Schreiner and soccer, one transfers for coaching, financial, and growth reasons to pursue Division I, and one stays at Schreiner but leaves baseball to lead sports media operations.

Key highlights:

  Why They Chose Schreiner

  Freshman Year Reality

  Team Culture and Cliques

  Our Why for Sports

<title>Season 2 - Into the Media Verse: Film Director Trivia, Favorites, and What Makes Movies Work</title>
<description>Welcome to Season 2 of the Student Voices of the Hill Country: A Schreiner Student Pod Series. In this series, we continue to explore the lives, views, and observations of Schreiner Students. In this Episode 1, we look at Into the Media Verse: Film Director Trivia, Favorites, and What Makes Movies Work.

Host Austin and cohosts Phoebe and Heath launch their first episode with a true/false director trivia segment, including Titanic—James Cameron; The Empire Strikes Back—Irvin Kershner; “Sinners”—Ryan Coogler, and discuss favorite films, Mission: Impossible—Fallout, The Sandlot, “Revenge of the Fifth”. They compare older directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Mel Brooks, John Ford, and newer directors, including James Gunn, J.J. Abrams, and Steven Spielberg, emphasizing that successful films depend on aligned writing, directing, producing, and crew execution, plus appropriate casting and research. The conversation critiques sequels, reboots, live-action remakes, inconsistent adaptations, and risks posed by writer strikes, citing examples across franchises such as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Marvel/DC, Borderlands, Fast &amp; Furious, Riverdale, and Stranger Things. They close by naming preferred films from selected directors, including Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Key highlights:

  Movie Directors

  Nostalgia and Superheroes

  Franchises Going Off Rails

  Disney Remakes And Musicals

  Writing From Scratch And Reboots

<title>Season 2 - Music as Communication: Chords, Connection, and Creative Process with Pavilion</title>
<description>Welcome to Season 2 of the Student Voices of the Hill Country: A Schreiner Student Pod Series. In this series, we continue to explore the lives, views, and observations of Schreiner students. In this Episode 2, we look at using chords as a metaphor for how listeners, performers, and creators communicate verbally and nonverbally through music.

Our hosts for this exploration are Alexandria French, a criminal justice major and orchestra musician, and Elle Reinarz, a communication studies major and former choir member. Their guests are Jakob Stevens Pavilion’s lead singer/guitarist/songwriter and Jagger Martin (bassist and music major with a finance minor), who discuss music’s impact as a universal language, community builder, and emotional outlet, plus how genre preferences shift with mood and seasons. The group cites facts about music therapy, average annual listening time, musicians’ higher anxiety/depression risk, and anecdotes about Bach/Handel and The Beatles. They explore how instrumental music communicates without lyrics through chord quality and context, address strategies for managing performance anxiety, and explain Pavilion’s origin, name, genre, message of authenticity, upcoming releases, and summer shows, concluding with a Beethoven quote on passion in performance.

Key highlights:

  Fun Facts and Music Therapy

  How Music Impacts Us

  Classical Music Without Lyrics

  Chords and Emotional Context

  Beatles Without Theory

  Dream Collaborations

      <title>Season 2 - Division III Student-Athlete Experience at Schreiner University</title>
<description>Welcome to Season 2 of the Student Voices of the Hill Country: A Schreiner Student Pod Series. In this series, we continue to explore the lives, views, and observations of Schreiner Students. In this episode 2, we look at the Student-Athlete Experience at Schreiner University, and how to balance time, facilities, academics, and NIL.

Our hosts today are Cody, who plays soccer, JT, who is also on the soccer team, and Amari, who runs track. They discuss the Division III student-athlete experience at Schreiner University versus Division I/II, emphasizing that DIII is a major commitment but less like a “job,” with athletics secondary to academics. They contrast the smaller-scale facilities and medical support at Schreiner with the large D1 resources, including multiple training areas, fields, and athlete-focused nutrition options; Amari notes that track practices are held at local high schools due to limited facilities. They highlight DIII’s close-knit community and easier access to coaches and professors through small classes, while noting that D1 athletes may receive more structured academic support (e.g., tutors) but face heavier schedules and greater stress. They describe NIL as minimal at DIII (e.g., about $150 earned) versus potentially massive at D1, and note that pathways can exist from DIII to higher levels and even to professional opportunities.

Key highlights:

  Money And Facilities Gap

  Small School Community

  Team Culture and Competition

  D1 Grind Versus D3
